Division one west - WHITLAND lost their final match of the season as they made the short journey up the road to play Carmarthen Athletic.
The Borderers were unable to repeat their home victory in another tight tussle where they had their chances but didn’t take them.
Whitland had won by 10-5 at home and, in an equally close-fought encounter, they took the early lead with a penalty by outside half Scott Newton. But they found themselves 8-3 behind at half time after centre Viv Jenkins benefited from an overlap to score an unconverted try for the Athletic and Mike Sauro slotted a penalty.
The second period was just as evenly contested, with both sides showing real commitment – and the Athletic opened the scoring with an unconverted try by right winger Luke Marshall.
The Borderers’ talented young full back Nico Setaro then sliced through for an unconverted try at the other end.
Sauro was off-target with a penalty chance for the Athletic and then Whitland had a period of pressure which they couldn’t convert into points – before Carmarthen Athletic sealed success with a try from left winger Owain Herbert.
Although Sauro was again unable to land the extra points it mattered little since the homesters were good value for their, victory.
Whitland now finish in fifth spot.
