SWANSEA CITY star Joe Allen is on the brink of achieving a lifelong dream, that’s stepping onto the famous Old Trafford turf to face Manchester United this Sunday.

With the Swans clinching a dramatic 4-4 draw with Wolves at home on Saturday, that point ensured that Brendan Rodgers’ Swans are mathematically safe from relegation, and will definitely live to fight another season in the Premier League.

Sir Alex Ferguson was a spectator in the Liberty Stadium stand, intensely watching the action and busy scribbling notes, sitting alongside assistant manager Mick Phelan and coach Rene Meulensteen, the three of them working out United’s strategy for when the Swans arrive in Manchester next week.

Allen, who scored his side’s second goal in that eight-goal thriller spoke to Telegraph Sport afterwards about the adrenaline rush of playing in Premier League. He’s also looking forward to the tasty prospect of lining-up in the forthcoming fixture for the Swans against champions Manchester United, the team he supported as a boy growing up in Narberth.

Allen said: “It’s always nice to score. My shot took a deflection off the defender before it hit the back of the net. But I’ll take that.”

Asked if the Premier League has lived up to his high expectation he said it definitely had.

“Firstly at the start of the season our aim was to stay up and show people that we can play at this level, and secondly, we wanted to show everyone that we can compete, especially at the Liberty where we have played against some tough opposition and got some memorable victories,” said Allen.

“But at the same time games like today remind me that you must not lose concentration or effort because you get punished.”

The 22-year-old came on as a second half substitute in the Swans’ 1-0 home defeat against Manchester United back in November last year. Javier Hernandez got on the end of Ryan Giggs’ cross inside the box to score the decisive winner with only 11 minutes gone.

Wales international Allen, since that second half appearance, has been one of the first names pencilled in Brendan Rodgers’ Swans starting line-up week-in, week-out, and he has grown massively in stature playing alongside Leon Britton in centre midfield. He can also boast a remarkable 100% pass rate in the match at Bolton only the other week.

Relishing the prospect of playing against the champions next, he could not hide his obvious excitement.

“It’s been a massive dream of mine to play at Old Trafford.

“At the start of the season when the fixtures obviously came out it was one of the first one’s you look out for.

“We’ve had to wait a long time for it, but it’s an occasion that I think every single player in the dressing room is looking forward to and being a part of playing against the champions.”

The following week the Swans entertain Carling Cup winners and FA Cup finalists Liverpool at the Liberty in their final game of the season.

“That’s another great game. Again when the fixture list came out I think there were a lot of people who were hopeful that we would be safe before we went into those two big games.

“Thankfully we’ve done that. Now we can concentrate on trying to perform in those games and ending the season on a highlight.”
