A SUPERB hat-trick by outstanding young No 8 Chris Sousha was the highlight of Fishguard’s vital win over St Clears.

But it was a committed all-round team performance that saw the Seagulls not only beat another team with its eyes on the title but pick up a bonus point for scoring four tries.

Small wonder then that in the post match warm-down coaches Huw Evans and Randall Williams praised their pack for almost total domination. Also the back division were equally effective in defence as the Seagulls kept a clean sheet.

This was especially important in the first half when Fishguard played into a stiff breeze but were still ten points ahead.

But it was the Saints who had the first scoring chance when referee Jason Ludgate, who had a good game, awarded them a penalty but Chris Rodenhurst was wide of the mark from 30 yards. It was their only real scoring chance as Seagulls’ skipper Steve Jenkins and his pack dominated matters in the set-pieces and the loose, where the captain, Mark James and especially Sousha ensured turn-over ball aplenty.

Nathan Jenkins, Richard Hunter, Gerwyn Davies, Gavin Walsh and Andrew Morrillo provided the spade work and the Seagulls took the lead after 13 minutes when Sousha rounded off a period of pressure by crashing over in the left corner. Steve Jenkins added a second unconverted try in similar circumstances and the Seagulls were well on the way to victory.

To be fair to St Clears they never threw in the towel but were under more pressure in the second half and a James Griffiths’ penalty was followed by two more tries by the powerful Sousha, one of them converted by Griffiths.

It nicely completed an excellent performance by the Seagulls, who know that to take the title they will need to play just as well when the teams meet again in St Clears this month.
