Tenby United 15 Whitland 20 Whitland's experienced second team fended off a strong challenge from a determined Tenby United Seconds to win the Junior Union Cup at Haverfordwest, with their backs having that extra thrust that saw points scored at key times.
It was never more evident than from the last move of the first period, with Tenby leading 7-0 and worthy of a greater points lead, but conceding position from a careless knock-on close to their own line.
They were put under immediate pressure and, after conceding a penalty in their 22, they went to sleep and allowed the Borderers' scrum half Adam Davies to take a quick tap and snipe through to the posts.
Winger Ross Michael added the conversion and finished up with ten points.
Fly half Ross Harries also crossed for a try as the Borderers' backs generally had the edge.
Whitland had started off really well as Harries made a couple of incisive breaks but Justin Richards, Nicky Allen, Richard Rossiter, Simon Griffiths and Mark Brace led their forward surges alongside youngsters like Tom James but they failed to turn pressure into points until the 32nd minute, when Allen drove through alongside Brace and Richards was quickly up in support to score a try which Mark Stevens converted. Richards was also involved as Tenby drove through again but when Stevens chipped for the corner he found Whitland winger Mark Lee back to cover.
Then came the equalising score for Whitland and after the break they added another two penalties from Michael as Harries and skipper Krystian Richards kept the Whitland backs moving and Tenby conceded penalties for killing the ball.
Tenby lost half backs Neil Duffy and Stevens to yellow cards and Whitland added another try when Harries broke clear up the right flank and Michael converted.
Tenby flanker Richards went very close to a second score but was superbly held up by Lee Glanville, on for injured centre Ali Bowen, and Whitland cleared the danger.
Tenby brought on Lee Tucker and Mike Evans to bolster their pack and although Neil Powling missed a long-range penalty the Seasiders fought back with a penalty from Stevens, after Whitland flanker Matthew Owens was sin-binned, and a good try by Nicky Allen after winger Dave Otten had started the move and prop Brace put Allen through with a lovely little pass.
It set up a tight finish where Mike Evans almost put Paul Luger through but was recalled for a forward pass and Whitland held on to take the silverware, which was presented to Krystian Richards by Tony Jones of Coors Brewers, the Junior Union Cup sponsors.
