Pembroke and district swimming club held its annual club championships recently, with the support of Waterston based company Dragon LNG.

The club’s 35th winter championship was held over two days, at Pembroke leisure centre.

The championship was well attended, with 63 swimmers and 15 family relay teams. The relay was won by the Bunker family and the atmosphere was fantastic.

There were some great swims, with Mikey Hire, Carys Thomas, Katherine Peatey and Abbie Williams breaking long-standing club records.

The standard of swimming was excellent and the younger swimmers did particularly well.

Some are coached by the club and also attend lessons in the Pembrokeshire County Council learn to swim programme at Pembroke leisure centre.

Pembrokeshire county swimming development coach Paul Dowey was present. He believes that the partnership working between the local authority and Pembrokeshire clubs is great and there is no better time to get involved in swimming.

Swim Wales officials Ann and Bob Adams and Pembroke leisure centre school swimming teacher, Trina Bowen, oversaw the competition, ensuring the club complied with FINA rules. Ann and Bob also presented a glass seahorse, which is the club logo, to each entrant.

The club is grateful to all the local shops that gave so generously towards raffle prizes collected by Mary Thompson. Councillor Pearl Llewellyn, the mayor of Pembroke, was thanked for presenting awards and medals.

This year there was a new ‘swimmer of the year’ award, which was presented to club and county swimmer Daniel Thomas.

Club chairman, Phill Thomas, praised the efforts of all club members for the hard work put in throughout the year and the teamwork involved in organising a great competition to end the year. The squad is now preparing for the next big competitions this year.

These include the Dragon meet at Swansea national pool and the Pembrokeshire long distance event at Pembroke leisure centre.
