Milford Haven chief karate instructor Kevin John has recently been awarded a fourth dan.
It’s a fantastic achievement, considering it is awarded solely on lifetime dedication to the sport, rather than grading.
The 34-year-old began karate aged 11 and joined Milford Haven karate club as a student.
He worked hard in lessons and won many trophies in the first few years, mainly at local level in the under-16 categories.
Kevin then entered bigger competitions, competing against teams from England, Russia and Italy, adding to his growing trophy collection.
In 1997, Kevin was selected for the Great Britain international team Kevin said: “Representing Great Britain was definitely the proudest moment.”
In that top international event he won gold in the team event against Italy. He also gained silver in the individual.
That same year, he became the Welsh Grand Prix kumite karate champion. He won silver in the same event in 2000 and 2001, and bronze medals followed in 1995, 1996, 1999 and 2003.
In February 2004, he became a karate instructor and took over the running of Milford Haven karate club from club founder and fifth dan, Colin Harding.
Twice a week he teaches many students up to black belt level.
Kevin was awarded his third dan black belt in 2005.
He was awarded this latest, fourth dan, for his hard work and determination, ensuring that the club continues to flourish.
His future aspirations are to continue competing at national and international level and to have future champions within the club.
