Crymych 25.
Haverfordwest 23.
A last-gasp penalty kicked by home scrum-half Huw Rees not only proved to be the final touch of an absorbing local derby clash between Crymych and Haverfordwest but gave the Preseli Men a narrow victory by a two-point margin.
It denied the Blues what they believed was a come-back success because Steve Williams had just previously edged his team into a one-point lead with an 80th minute penalty after they had trailed for much of the match – only for a forward to get off-side, concede the penalty and allow Rees to slot his sixth, and most important, penalty of the game.
In a typically tight local clash there was no quarter asked for or given but only two yellow cards as Crymych’s veteran prop John Davies had ten minutes in the ‘sin-bin’ in the first period and Blues’ No 8 Dafydd Bowen sat there in the second half.
Rees landed two penalties on target for Crymych in the opening 12 minutes and skipper Steve Williams responded with a penalty a minute later before Davies was again on target for the Preseli Men with another three-pointer in the 37th minute and a fourth from the final kick of the first half to put his side 12-3 in front at half time.
Shortly after the restart Haverfordwest scored the opening try when winger Chris Shewry kicked ahead and Steve Williams won the race for the touch-down before adding the conversion – and Huw Rees was again successful with a penalty before converting a penalty try when the Blues were a man short.
With a 22-10 lead it seemed as if Crymych had done enough but Haverfordwest fought back well to register a try for Gareth Green after the prop had done well to support a rampaging run by Bowen. Steve Williams notched the simplest of conversions and then landed those penalties after 77 and 80 minutes to nudge his team a single point in front.
But there was still time for another restart, a critical Blues’ error and a Rees kick won the match.
