Llangennech 31.

Narberth 38.

Narberth scored 27 unanswered points in a clinical first period, but almost snatched defeat from the jaws of victory as they allowed Llangennech to claw their way back into contention, before the Otters held out for a good win.

After a relatively even first 15 minutes it was all Narberth in an entertaining first half for their hardy band of supporters, starting with a very good try for full back Matthew Davies, who used his pace to good effect before Nick Jones added the extra points.

The Otters doubled their lead when scrum half Adrian Killa sniped through for a try which Jones converted and Matthew Davies was again involved as he took a pass from Aled Davies to slot a dropped goal between the posts.

There were another two unconverted tries for Narberth in the 34th and 36th minutes from wingers Nick Jones and Tom Bonnell and at half time it seemed as if the Otters were on their way to a big win.

But perhaps they eased their foot off the pedal because there were Llangennech fireworks afterwards when No 8 Chris Jones opened their account with a try. Although the Otters responded quickly with a second Nick Jones’ try the home side grabbed three tries in a highly productive 11-minute spell where centre Stuart Fletcher, former Narberth winger Andrew Jones and replacement prop Gareth Morgan all crossed the line. Two of the tries converted by Andrew Thomas.

Narberth quelled the home fire a little via a Nick Jones’ penalty and another Matthew Davies dropped goal but Llangennech flanker and captain Rob Foley ploughed over for a try converted by Thomas to take his team to within seven points of a draw.

But the Otters held out for a good win, though one which had their coaches biting their nails a little in the second period.
