Gilfach Goch 46.

Haverfordwest 6.

Haverfordwest conceded 36 points in the opening period at Gilfach Goch as the homesters showed why they are third in division two (west).

But the Blues refused to surrender and can take consolation from the fact that they played well after the interval.

The Blues were without nine regulars but used the opportunity to give a run-out to other squad members. Although they were in trouble early on, Haverfordwest gave 100% and never once let their heads drop against a big home pack and a pacy set of backs orchestrated by Gareth Walters.

Nathan Walters and Darren Bright shared four tries for Gilfach while other tries came from Adam Friday and Christian Jones. Walters landed two early penalties and kicked five conversions from six attempts to send his team to a big score.

For the Blues, the pack grafted hard against bigger opposition, with the back row of Brett Davies, Richard Walters and Richard Brazell tackled hard. Mark Busch having to go off injured but second row partner Tom Pellowe did really well in the lineout.

Skipper Steve Williams claimed the Blues’ points with two first-half penalties, while Richard James, Garth and Dan John, Dan Harries, Mike and Jonathan Venables tackled themselves to a standstill.
