Newport 6. Carew 2.

Carew travelled to Chepstow and a stone’s throw from the old Severn bridge to play Newport with half of their first XI missing through injury and work commitments, drafting in 2nd XI players of youth and experience who performed admirably.

With Mason barged off the ball early in the game Carew were awarded a penalty corner which went close to opening the scoring.

Carew did take the lead with a goal from captain Steve Kendrick after 15 minutes, but immediately lost the lead to a quick break by the Newport forwards.

It was James Mason who put Carew back in front from a quick free hit taken outside the circle by Wheeler, but again Newport hit back with a controversial goal. Some fine defending from Carew kept Newport out as the visitors came under pressure, but as the half-time whistle blew Newport were awarded a goal to turn around 3-2 up.

Carew were on top for much of the second half as they pushed for the equaliser, but this proved to be Carew’s downfall as they were hit twice on the break and saw the Newport centre forward bag a brace of goals in as many minutes.

More fouls followed on both Mason, who was having a torrid time as he broke through the Newport defence, and Kendrick as they were taken out on more than one occasion only to find the offences going unpunished. To finish off a frustrating day Newport were awarded a goal with a minute to go.

Team: L. Thomas (GK), S. Kendrick (Capt), D. Ferguson, D. Head, R. Fieldhouse, O. Johnson, T. Pritchard, B. Wheeler, J. Mason, A. Hall, M. Fieldhouse, J. Evans.
