Entering its second year at Trinity Sports Facility in Carmarthen, the Dyfed Netball League continues to attract teams from west Wales counties.

Included in this year’s line-up are Pembrokeshire teams Milford, Pembroke A and B. Carmarthenshire teams include the Aces, Dragons and youth team, the Colts along with Lampeter, St Clears and two teams from the Cardigan stronghold in Ceredigion.

Season 08-09 follows the same structure as last season, with the teams divided into two pools until Christmas.

Following the league’s points system, by January it will be clear which teams will be playing in Division One and Division Two, and most importantly which teams are the favourites to walk away with the season’s trophies.

League matches will start on October 20th with evenly pegged fixtures involving St Clears v Dragons, Milford v Cardigan A, Pembroke B v Carmarthen Colts and Carmarthen Aces v Lampeter. Two rounds have been played in the Dyfed Netball cup. In the first round Pembroke B played Carmarthen Dragons, and Cardigan A played Carmarthen Colts.

Both games were evenly matched in terms of netball skill and movement around the court. Stamina and playing to the final whistle were the deciding factors as to which teams would progress to the second round.

Pembroke B had a flying start against Carmarthen Dragons, combining fantastic defence and attacking phases of the game, enabling a score of 11-6 after the first quarter. The second quarter saw a rejuvenated Carmarthen team pull the score back to equal terms, ending in 16-all at half-time and all to play for. The second half of the game followed a goal for goal pattern, keeping the score line within a few goals of each other. The game ended in a 34-37 win for the more experienced Carmarthen team who will face the winners of the other cup match played on the night, Cardigan B.

The second cup game gave Cardigan B their first win of the season.

They played the much-improved young side of Carmarthen Colts, who are going from strength to strength.

The game followed the same goal-for-goal pattern following a confident start by the younger side. Having combined effectively throughout all court play, the Colts were ahead with a 10-7 and 20-17 scoreline at both quarter and half-time respectively.

The three goal gap closed in the second half with a shake up in the defensive third for Cardigan B, narrowing the score at the end of the quarter to just one goal at 28-27.

During the final quarter of the game, the more experienced side of Cardigan B stepped up the pace with a flourish of goals from sister combination GA Gwawr Evans and GS Hannah Evans, securing the win with a final score of 30-35 to the Cardigan team.
