Tycroes 0.
Pembroke 7.
Phil Williams was the toast of his Pembroke colleagues as the experienced full back scored the only try of the game at Tycroes, to earn his team an excellent away win.
Known to all at Crickmarren as ‘Taffy’, the games teacher was perfectly placed to round off a move which started with a rumble by the Pembroke pack in their own 22 after 21 minutes and ended with most of the team involved in handling as centre Nick James supplied Williams with the scoring pass before Scott Bowen did well to convert from wide out.
The first quarter had been relatively even but Pembroke might have added further points before the break had they taken their chances, with flankers Steve Dyde and Tom Surtees catching the eye in a series of rucks where skipper Gareth Jones and his namesake Tom also featured as the Scarlets’ pack went well.
Tycroes had their moments after the interval as they showed why they were sitting in fifth place in the table. But Phil Williams, Ryan Hayward and John Williams covered well at the back, while Nicky James and Mark Williams bottled up the middle. Half-backs Ross McNally and Bowen kicked sensibly and Pembroke finished the last ten minutes exerting pressure on Tycroes, but unable to add further points.
But it mattered little since the Scarlets were able to keep a clean sheet and as a result were delighted to make the journey home with the points in the bag.
