Newcastle Emlyn 18.
Haverfordwest 14.
Haverfordwest fought hard against Newcastle Emlyn at Ddol Wiber but in the final analysis had to settle for the consolation of a bonus point as they were shaded out by an Emlyn side which knew it had been pushed all the way.
A measure of just how tight things were can be gauged from the fact that the scoreline was just 8-6 in favour of the Emlyn at the halfway stage after they had taken the early lead with two good penalties by outside half Steve Williams in the opening six minutes.
But two minutes later Emlyn responded when winger Wayne Parsons chased a speculative kick ahead by No 10 Rhydian Harries and just won the race for the touchdown. Harries missed the conversion but was successful with a penalty attempt to put his team two points ahead at half-time.
Steve Williams edged Haverfordwest ahead again within minutes of the restart with a third penalty but after 50 minutes Harries replied with a kick on target to swing the game back in Emlyn’s favour. They added another vital seven points when centre Dyfrig Davies sliced through to the posts for Rhydian Harries to slot the simple conversion.
Dan Harries had the final word for Haverfordwest when he claimed a very good unconverted try but it was too little, too late for the Blues as they at least had a bonus point as reward for their considerable efforts.
