Pembroke Dock Harlequins 17.

Brynamman 16.

Pembroke Dock Harlequins’ coach Lenny Scourfield had predicted a win over table topping Brynamman and his players responded with the narrowest of verdicts as centre Darren Gibby scored the last-gasp try to seal success.

Coach Lenny Scourfield said: “I could see in training that the boys were up for it and although we are still well short of full strength they deserved their win because they battled hard throughout and Gibby showed how to finish off in style.”

Gibby’s match-winner came in the very last minute as the Quins trailed 16-12 and there had been three successive scrums which had broken up and the home sides appeals for a penalty try were turned down. But it proved fourth time lucky as skipper Gareth Scourfield broke down the blind side from his No. 8 berth and spotted Gibby lurking with intent on his inside, slipped the pass inside and watched Gibby plough over so that the whole team and supporters could celebrate.

Although it wasn’t a dirty match there were nine yellow cards issued for technical infringements, five to the Quins, while the visitors had four and a red card to balance things up. At one time in the second period the bemused Quins had three off at the same time but kept defending well.

Dean Lawrence landed an early penalty for the Quins but Brynamman replied with a three-pointer by scrum half Dafydd Jones, who shared two other penalties with Lawrence before he landed the conversion of a try by winger Dean Williams to nudge his team 13-6 ahead at the interval.

Lawrence landed his third penalty but again Jones replied for the visitors before Lawrence added penalty number four to keep the Quins in contention.

The Quins’ pack really raised the threshold in terms of effort but still couldn’t break down the stubborn Brynamman defence – until those vital closing moments when Gibby was the hero and the Quins were worthy winners!
