Rumours that junior girls football was struggling in Pembrokeshire were well and truly dispelled recently, when the committee of the Pembrokeshire junior girls football league ran a tournament at Phoenix Park, Goodwick.
Eight clubs, featuring 21 teams and over 130 players at three different age groups, participated in three separate tournaments, on three separate pitches.
The clubs taking part were hosts Goodwick, Camrose, Clarbeston Road, Burton, Kilgetty, Johnston, Tenby and Pennar, and all the clubs supplied a referee to officiate the 29 games that took place during the day.
In all the competitions the teams were split into two groups, and each team played each other in a round robin tournament. In the under-11s Goodwick and Camrose qualified for the final and Camrose proved victorious with a 2-0 win. Chloe Campbell, of Goodwick, was awarded player of the day. In the under-13s Goodwick defeated Kilgetty 2-0 with two goals from Rebecca Hayes while Molly Griffiths was awarded player of the day.
In the over-16 section Tenby and Pennar qualified for the final, and a single goal from Kirsty Wallace ensured a 1-0 win for Pennar. Sophie Izzard was adjudged player of the tournament. At the conclusion of the games league chairman Paul Thomas presented the trophies to the winners and runners-up and thanked Goodwick Utd for hosting the event, and hoped that the successful venture could become an annual event. He also wished all participating clubs success in the forthcoming season.
