It was Pembrokeshire youth’s turn to host this annual golf match against Wexford, which was started by Alan Scott 14 years ago.
Every year, one of the teams hosts the other and the competitors stay with each other for the two days.
Forty-eight players took part in the two-day event, which, despite the rain, produced a high standard of competitive golf.
The first day was a four ball better ball (pairs) stableford event. The pairs were made up of one from each side to introduce the Wexford team to the golf course, which held up well over the two days despite the torrential rain.
The competition was won by Andrew Arnold (Pembs) and Alan Furnace (Wexford) and runners-up were Elliott Harding (Pembs) and Pearce Dore (Wexford).
The second day brought the serious business of the team event, and a bit of respite from the weather. The Mayoral Cup was donated by the then Mayor of Wexford in 1994, and the Irish team were in Pembrokeshire defending the trophy. Despite the Pembrokeshire teams’ best efforts, Wexford proved too strong overall and retained the cup.
The local boys can still be very proud of the effort and application they contributed to an excellent two days of golf, and the sporting manner in which they competed.
