CAREW moved to the top of the table ahead of Monday’s (Aug 26) final day as they beat Neyland on Saturday (Aug 24).

Carew have hit fine form in the closing stages of the season, scoring over 260 runs in each of their previous four games.

They had lost to Neyland earlier in the season by 98 runs but this one was a different game as both sides knew what was at stake.

Carew batted first but could only reach 140-8 from their 45 overs.

Morgan Grieve scored 10 for the visitors but they were indebted to Shaun Whitfield who made 76.

Gareth Lewis finished unbeaten on 32 to help Carew post a total they could try and defend. Sean Hannon had 2-14 from his spell while Ross Hardy also had good figures of 2-15. Tom Pritchard also claimed a wicket as Neyland were looking at 141 to win the game.

However, Neyland also found it difficult in their reply, losing two early wickets before falling to 55-6.

That became seven but Neyland rallied as a stand of 40 for the eighth wicket gave them hope.

Andrew Miller scored 24, Dai Davies added 23 and Ashley Watkins scored 16 but it wasn’t enough for the league leaders. Shaun Whitfield then took two wickets in as many balls though to swing the game back in Carew’s favour. Carew then took the final wicket, bowling Neyland out for 106 to earn victory by 34 runs.

Whitfield finished with excellent figures of 5-10 while James Hinchliffe had 4-10 from his spell.

The final games played on Monday (Aug 26), saw Carew taking on St Ishmaels while Neyland travelled to Saundersfoot.

A win for Carew would give them the title but they knew that any slip up would give Neyland the title if they were to beat Saundersfoot.
