Tata Steel eventually succumbed to the skills and power of the Narberth team but put up a brave defence and made life very difficult for the Otters during the first half of the match. After an early try by Narberth No.8 Richard Rees, it was Tata Steel that took the lead when their centre raced through under the posts for a try converted by their fly half to edge in front 5-7. However this turned out to be their only score of the day.

Hooker Tom Clarke put the Otters back in front when he squeezed his way over the line from a rolling maul for a try converted by fly half Ianto Griffiths (12-7). Richard Rees then left the field injured to be replaced by Alex Jenkins who then became the Narberth player with the most league appearances (316) since the inception of the Heineken League in 1990.

Dogged defence by the visitors kept Narberth at bay until just before half time when a flowing movement from within their own half eventually saw full back Ashley Sutton dive over in the top corner for a try converted by Griffiths (19-7).

At the start of the second half the Otters slightly changed their tactics to avoid the visitors’ rushing midfield defence. Accurate kicks along the touchline resulted in two quick tries, one scored again by Sutton and then wing Dean James raced over in the corner and Griffiths converted to stretch the lead to 31-7. Centre Hedd Nicholas who was causing Tata a lot of problems with his forceful midfield running then broke through the failing defence and passed to supporting wing Josh Evans who crashed over in the corner for another try converted by Griffiths (38-7). Dean James then powered over in the corner for his second try again converted by Griffiths (45-7).

A break through the middle by centre Aled Rees saw the ball quickly moved to supporting flanker Josh Hamer who scored a try under the posts converted by Griffiths (52-7). Scrum half Alex Williams was replaced by Lewys Gibby who received a loud cheer from the large crowd on gaining his 100th league appearance for the Otters and he took full advantage of the now tired and demoralised Tata team by scoring a hattrick of tries in a twenty-minute spell one of which was converted by Griffiths to extend the score line to 69-7.

The match was brought to an end when No.6 Rhys Williams raced in unopposed from about 30 metres out to score the twelfth try under the posts converted by Griffiths to bring up the final score of 76-7 in favour of the Otters. Man of the match was named as centre Hedd Nicholas and there were great celebrations in the clubhouse when news came through that Brecon RFC, the only other unbeaten team in the Championship division, had lost to Llangennech RFC. The Otters next home league match will be against Bonymaen RFC on Saturday, 30th December.
