Pembroke 20.
Pontarddulais 5.
Pembroke showed their real potential at this level as they gained a comfortable and fully-deserved win over a Pontarddulais side which is currently in the top three and hankering after promotion.
But they encountered a Scarlets' side determined to put behind them two recent defeats against lower teams and adopting a very positive and no-nonsense approach, with James Roberts catching the eye in the back row but closely followed by the rest of Gareth Jones' lively pack. Richard Morris and Richard Mason helped Jones ensure good possession on their own scrum ball, Gavin Nicholas and Dai Beynon provided a share of lineout ball and Roberts found back row colleagues Steve Dyde and Robin Badham also ready for the challenge.
The Scarlets took the lead after 19 minutes when swift hands from Ross McNally, Lewis Davies, Mark Williams and Barry Bowen put them on the attack and a neat chip by Williams allowed Bowen to supply the scoring pass for Jackson's corner try.
Lewis Davies missed the conversion but notched a penalty to give Pembroke an 8-0 lead and they widened the gap almost straight after the turnaround when a combined move involving forwards and backs put winger Huw Day in at the corner for another unconverted try.
Pontarddulais grabbed a try by Richard Johnston but the Bont were unable to maintain a head of steam as Pembroke's pack tackled like demons and there was good cover at the back by Scott Bowen, supported by Jackson and Day. The Scarlets finally sealed victory after 67 minutes with a try by Dai Beynon as the big lock rounded off a move initiated by Day to speed the last 22 metres for a cracking try that Lewis Davies converted to round off a great day for the Crickmarren Boys.
