Pembroke ladies recently travelled to Milford to play Fishguard ladies in their first league fixture of 2008.
In terrible conditions and after a delay the game started with Fishguard attacking strongly, which immediately put Pembroke's midfield and defence under pressure.
Pembroke weathered the early pressure and began to get their game together, securing good ball for forwards Allys Silcox and Jessica Lawrence. Allys Silcox broke the deadlock against the run of play to give Pembroke the advantage.
This goal woke up both teams and Pembroke started to make their triangles and find their form.
Kate and Libby Roberts, making their debut for the senior team, showed composure beyond their years and put in an excellent performance, as did under-15s captain Hayley Ferrier at right wingback.
Pembroke continued to press the Fishguard goal with the homesters hitting Pembroke on the break. They were unlucky not to equalise when the ball went inches to the wrong side of the post.
This seemed to drive Pembroke on. A more determined performance began to show, and from this pressure they increased their lead through Jessica Lawrence.
The second half was very much the same as the first, but Pembroke took their scoring opportunities and Fishguard didn't.
Pembroke increased their lead through Kathryn Hunter and a further two goals by Jessica Lawrence wrapped up her hat trick.
Gill Lewis umpired the fixture.
Team: Victoria Scourfield, Brenda Scourfield, Hayley Ferrier, Kirsty Smith, Jackie Cadogan, Kathryn Hunter, Jenny Cadogan, Libby Roberts, Allys Silcox, Kate Roberts, Jessica Lawrence, Laura Scott.
Under-15s.
Pembroke under-15s travelled to Tenby to face an excellent side in fine form, and having lost heavily to Tenby earlier in the season, it was a chance to see how the young Pembroke side had improved.
Tenby attacked strongly from the whistle, bringing Pembroke goalkeeper Laura Frazer into action immediately for an excellent save. The Pembroke defence and midfield worked extremely hard but could not secure enough ball to really trouble Tenby.
There were some excellent individual performances by several Pembroke players, notably Laura Frazer, playing her first league fixture in goal, and Fionne Ashman at right wing back, who tackled and defended like her life depended on it.
Hollie Thompson at sweeper worked relentlessly together with centre midfield pairing of Zoe Priestley and Hayley Ferrier.
Danielle Rowe, Tess Saunders, Emily Kaijaks, Amy Powell and Alice Williams are improving all the time, and it was nice to see the return of Chloe Lloyd after a broken arm.
Team: Laura Frazer, Fionne Ashman, Alice Williams, Chloe Lloyd, Zoe Priestley, Hayley Ferrier, Emily Kaijaks, Amy Powell, Tess Saunders, Danielle Rowe, Hollie Thompson Anyone interested in joining the under-15s can come along to training at 6pm on Tuesdays, at the astroturf pitch, Pembroke.
West Wales Cup.
Pembroke ladies travelled to Milford Haven for the second round of the competition.
Pembroke started very strongly, immediately bringing the Milford keeper into action, but some excellent saves prevented them from taking an early lead.
Pembroke were so concerned about attacking that they forgot to mark. A breakout by Milford left Pembroke's sweeper Laura Scott in a three against one situation that only had one outcome as the home side opened the scoring.
Milford grabbed a second goal soon after and held on to a healthy lead at the interval.
A stern talking to at half time seemed to do the trick as Pembroke started to keep the ball and make their triangles, eventually pulling a goal back.
But, from the restart, Milford broke away to give them a 3-1 advantage. Pembroke attacked and had Milford pinned in their own 25. They could not get the ball past an outstanding keeper, until a short corner was awarded.
An excellent strike by Kathryn Hunter was again saved excellently by the Milford keeper, but Nadia Lawrence converted the rebound making it 3-2.
This gave Pembroke the boost they needed and from what seemed like an impossible situation they levelled the scores through Allys Silcox.
Both teams attacked strongly looking for the win to avoid the dreaded penalty flicks. With seconds remaining on the clock, Nadia Lawrence put the ball in the net to give Pembroke a thrilling 4-3 victory.
Both sides gave their all in this excellent game.
Bernie Wheeler umpired for Pembroke.
