A Whitland side inspired by Paul Davies showed why they are again one of the favourites to take the silverware this season after two impressive wins to kick-fire their challenge in the Pembrokeshire Indoor Cricket League.
Davies scored 16 not out and 26 not out against Saundersfoot and Hook respectively, conceded only 17 runs in four miserly overs, grabbed four catches and was involved in a run-out!
Seasiders struggle to score runs.
Whitland lost just one wicket in their win over a young Saundersfoot side bolstered by Roger Stanford, with Kevin Pearce falling to an excellent return catch by David Dunfee from a well-driven shot.
The Seasiders had a classy 30 from Simon Stanford and Dunfee managed double figures but they were shot out for 52 in 9.2 overs by Whitland's experienced side after two early run outs to John Marsh and Yannick Parker had set them on the back foot and regular Whitland keeper Kevin Pearce showed his all-round cricketing skills by grabbing 3 for 4.
Pearce apart, it was never going to be a score to challenge Whitland as Davies stroked a leisurely 16 and Ed John hit a six and two fours in his undefeated 22 as Whitland reached their target in only 4.5 overs.
Hook struggle to raise tempo.
Whitland batted first against Hook and made an excellent start through Davies (26) and Pearce (25) but after they retired they lost their way a little as Tom Blaxland and Ben Field bowled well for Hook. Shane Morgan finished on 16 not out and Whitland finished on 95 for 2 in their allotted ten overs, a reasonable score but they must have hoped for a three-figure tally after such a good start.
But Hook lost three quick wickets as Whitland again fielded like dervishes. Blaxland fell to a superb Davies catch off the bowling of Mark Lee as he dived forward and low to his left, and although Ben Field (12) and Brennan Martin (24) batted well they were dismissed for a disappointing 54 total that showed their relative inexperience in the indoor game as all the Whitland bowlers bowled good lines.
Field fires Hook up.
Ben Field had earlier led Hook to victory over Saundersfoot, who had batted first and managed a healthy 84 for 2 thanks to Simon Stanford (25 not out) and Yannick Parker (26) with old man' Stanford chipping in late with a brisk 16 not out as Field was the top Hook bowler.
Field finished a good day personally as he scored 26 before retiring alongside Matthew Rowlands (27) before Dave Petrie (15 not out) and Matthew Holder steered Hook home with an over still in hand.
