For Jack Mason it was a day of pain, but for him and the Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) charity, it was definitely worth it.
A year ago this week, the 35-year-old completed Ironman Wales for the first time despite only having a short period of preparation time.
His original plan was to complete the course in 2020 but after helping Whitland RFC win the Pembrokeshire KO Cup on a rain soaked night in Milford in May - he decided to go for it in 2019. It meant just four months of training time but he threw himself into the challenge.
He duly completed the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and 26.2 mile run in 16 hours and 40 minutes. And 12 months on, Mason has been able to present a cheque to CRY for an amazing amount of £10,123.33.
It's a poignant charity for Mason, whose cousin Dean tragically died from a previously undiagnosed heart condition whilst on a family holiday in 2010, aged just 26.
Since then, the Dean Mason Memorial Fund has been set up to help provide free screening for young people.
Jack, who was 'overwhelmed' with the amount, said he wanted to thank his family, friends, and work colleagues for all their support and sponsorship.
