The owners and staff at Trefloyne Golf Club have gone from running a golf course, hotel and events venue to supporting the NHS as much as they possibly can.
From preparing more than 1000 free meals for NHS staff over the past three and half weeks, to offering free membership and even mowing the NHS logo into one of the temporarily disused fairways, Trefloyne have launched several methods of helping – despite maintaining social distancing rules.
Joan Beynon was inspired after seeing the video clip of critical care nurse Dawn Bilbrough who was upset after finding nothing left in the shops following a long shift caring for COVID-19 patients.
As a result the Beynons got the Trefloyne team together and set up "Dawn’s Chorus" – Feeding the Front Line NHS, which has delivered the 1000+ meals to Tenby and Saundersfoot surgeries, Tenby Ambulance Station and Tenby Walk-in centre, South Pembrokeshire Hospital and Pembroke Ambulance station, and the Glen and Seafront Pharmacies in Tenby.
Last week Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest received more than 100 meals. Joan’s son Tom Beynon packed and deliver them and said that the response was amazing, with people flocking round as much as possible at a distance of two metres.
It’s not been easy with all the social distancing rules to follow, and with Pip and Dave Trefloyne's chefs working 10/12 hours shifts in isolation in the kitchen. to date the Beynons have funded the operation, with the staff volunteering their services, but his week has seen some generous donations to support our NHS cause.
KD Designs in Llanelli bought a week’s meat to start the ball rolling, Tenby Town Traders Association bought vouchers at butcher Andrew Rees, Greengrocer Four Seasons and Sarah's Fish on Tenby Quay. The Ladies section at Trefloyne donated £600 of vouchers, and individual men members very generous support.
Trefloyne have also offered the rooms, Loft apartment and woodland lodge at the hotel for free use for NHS staff who cannot get to their own homes, while they are also offering a year of free membership for any NHS staff when the golf course re-opens, plus coaching where necessary.
To help drive the message home the NHS logo has been mown into the 15th fairway by he'd Green keeper Matt Whittock, not sure what the local ruling would be if you land on it but were up for suggestions!
“This has been a real team effort, so take a bow, Pip, Dave, Tom and Sian, Dewi and Matt Ronowitz, and Helen,” said Joan Beynon.
“The response has been brilliant, but perhaps the icing on the cake was the £600 of vouchers donated by the fantastic Ladies section at Trefloyne. So thanks to everyone who has contributed in any way… and please carry on doing so.
“There’s also a scheme to give NHS staff somewhere to stay when they’re resting after their shifts, if they can’t get home because of Covid 19.
“It makes excellent use of otherwise unoccupied holiday accommodation, Trefloyne has offered a self catering Loft Apartment, five en-suite rooms and two suites in The Coach House, and a Swedish lodge in the woodland.
“And one last important message to any golfers or would-be golfers working in the NHS. As soon as we’re open again come and join us, free for a year.
“That’s anyone working in the NHS – just turn up with your NHS ID and you’re in without any formal application procedure. We’ll be proud to have you.
“If you don’t yet play the game or you’re still learning, we’ll even arrange some coaching.
“Just let Ryan know you’re interested by ringing the Trefloyne pro-shop on 01834 845639 or emailing golf@trefloyne.com or leave a message at Trefloyne Manor on 01834 842165.
“Finally Matt Whittock, Trefloyne’s Head Greenkeeper, wanted to pay his own tribute to the NHS with creative mowing on the 15th.”
