Over 40s Welsh Veterans Cup: Caerau Ely 3-4 Hakin United
A LATE header from centre back Richard Bland sealed a fantastic comeback win for Hakin United at Caerau Ely in the Over 40s Welsh Veterans Cup yesterday.
The Vikings, finalists in the competition last year, trailed 3-1 at half time but fought way back after the break to level matters, before with five minutes left Bland met a Leigh Walters free kick and found the far corner to send the visitors through.
Hakin were ahead early when a ball over the top from Walters found Joff Lennon, and from 10 yards out he finished clinically.
But after that Gary Dawes’ side were guilty of some sloppy defending, and the home side struck three times before half time to seize control.
Early in the second half though it was man of the match Lennon who restored hope, picking up Richard Perry’s pass and beating his marker before curling a shot into the bottom corner.
And then it was Matthew Price who levelled matters when his deflected shot looped into the net.
It stayed 3-3 until the final moments when Walters was taken out near the touch line, and the midfielder then floated in a free kick that Bland nodded back across the keeper to score.
Hakin United Over 40s: Jason Morgan, Gerard Gray, Kristan Bennett, Richard Bland, Adam Collins, Richard Perry, Gary Dawes, Marc Gray, Joff Lennon, Leigh Walters, Adrian Skudder, Steve Williams, Jonathan James, Nick Jones, Paul Jones, Matthew Price.
