West Wales Intermediate Cup - Round 2:
Clarbeston Road 5
Camford Sports 1
It was Clarbeston Road who made the best of the difficult conditions in the West Wales Cup Round Two game on Saturday, coming away with a comfortable 5-1 win against a Camford Sports.
Full credit to Camford Sports as they never gave up and midway through the second half, would still have fancied their chances of getting back in the game after finding themselves 3-0 down at half time
The visitors play in the Carmarthenshire League First Division, which is the second tier, and have had a mixed start to their season, having won two league games from their 8 starts so far this season. But they made the bus trip west from Llanelli fully committed to progressing to round three.
After an early morning pitch inspection of Clarby’s second team pitch was passed as playable and it was surprisingly good at kick off.
Playing with the elements at their back, it was the home side who started the brighter but without creating any real clear cut opportunities.
With the score still goalless, as the half progressed Camford were finding their way into the game but that was halted on 20 minutes when Ben John received the ball 20 yards from goal and he unleashed a vicious right foot shot past Shaun Caton into the top right hand corner.
Minutes later and The Road doubled the lead. An in-swinging corner from player/manager Matt Ellis was headed home by Matt Griffiths at the far post.
Just before half time the home side added a third, with the ball worked out wide down the right side, an accurate cross Ellis was met by a powerful Ben John header to make it 3-0 at the break.
After the turnaround, it was full credit to Camford as they pressed to get back in the game. With conditions worsening, they got themselves back into the cup tie.
Good play from the away side saw Ben Bowler who picked up the ball and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top right corner, past Road’s stand-in keeper Greg Brown.
The next goal was vital - but a smart save from Brown kept the two goal margin. Within minutes the ball was worked up the other end and Ben John completing a ‘perfect’ hat-trick with a cool left foot finish to put Clarby 4-1 ahead.
The game was then put further out of reach as by Clarby winger Joules Ward who carried the ball down the left side before deftly chipping his effort over keeper Shaun Caton.
With the rain still relentless and conditions deteriorating, the 90 minutes were up and referee Keith McNiff blew for full time with the home side delighted they are in the hat for the round three draw.
