Alec Colley Cup quarter final: Haverfordwest 2nds (85-8) lost to Carew 2nds (86-4) by 6 wickets
There will be a new name on the Alec Colley Cup this year after holders Haverfordwest were beaten by Carew at The Racecourse last night.
New signing Sion Jenkins again looked good for the Rooks as he took four wickets to help restrict the hosts to 85-8, and although Carew then lost four wickets in their reply, 31 from Robbie Hicks ensured they won comfortably with more than eight overs to spare.
The Town opted to bat after winning the toss but it was Jenkins who got Carew on top by bowling Huw Scriven (5) second over, and removed Chris Fitzpatrick (0) the same way.
The pressure continued as Rob Scourfield trapped Dan Field (0) lbw, and when Jenkins had opener Nitin Mathias caught by Dai Rees for 17 (three fours), Haverfordwest were 27-4 and on the ropes.
James Marchant and Doug Johnson briefly steadied matters with a stand of 19, ended when the latter was just about caught by a juggling Jenkins off Keri Waters for 9.
Marchant was then joined by Phil Kirkby in taking the score to 69 before he holed out to Hicks off Jacob Knox for a top score of 19 (two fours).
Jenkins returned to skittle George Thomas (5) and Knox got his second wicket by removing Kirkby (10), and although John Ebeneezer (3 not out) and Filigi Varghese (2 not out) scrambled late runs a total of 85-8 didn’t look enough.
For Carew, Jenkins finished with 4-14, Knox 2-21, Scourfield 1-32 and Waters 1-14, all from five over stints.
The away side came out with intent in their chase as well as Morgan Grieve drove Marchant to the fence second ball, but next over the youngster was bowled by Teo Krol for 5.
But Hicks announced his arrival with two fours of Krol in his first three balls, although the bowler did give his side a glimmer when he trapped Barry Evans (5) lbw to leave Carew 25-2.
A swift stand of 34 between Hicks and Rees staved off any danger though, with Rees making 14 before being bowled by Filigi Varghese.
Haydn Shapcott (6 not out) came in and he and Hicks were nine runs from victory when the latter gave a return catch to Chris Fitzpatrick after five boundaries in his 31.
But Jenkins hit the same bowler for leg side fours off his first two balls, and then a bye finished matters as Carew set up a semi final clash with Cresselly.
For Haverfordwest, Marchant finished 0-19 off three overs, Krol 2-21 (3), Varghese 1-21 (2), Fitzpatrick 1-16 (2.4), and Kirkby 0-1 (1).
