Pembroke Seniors have come away with their best achievement ever in a major national competition run by the British Octopush Association.

The team took part at the National Championships, a two-part competition, at the John Charles Centre Aquatics pool in Leeds and followed up by reaching the final at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

The team got through the qualifiers held in March and earlier this month Pembroke finished sixth thus qualifying them to challenge for the National Championship Plate.

Just getting to this stage in the competition had never been achieved by the club before.

Earlier this month the team competed at Sheffield’s Ponds Fore International Pool, and they did brilliantly beating Glasgow 2-1 at the quarter final stage, then overcame Southampton/Bournemouth 4-1 in the semis, but were soundly beaten 7-0 by Orkney in the final.

Following this competition Pembroke are incredibly ranked tenth in the UK. Pembroke’s mixed team consisted of players with the youngest at 16 through to the oldest at 55.

The club has a fantastic junior section, in which players are constantly coming through to play at adult level, from the age of 15 /16.

Many of the younger juniors from the age of 14, are already taking part in the GB training camps, to hopefully make the Under 19’s and 23’s GB squads.

Nia Matthews, Vicky Crawford and Chloe Edwards have once again been selected for the GB squads and will be representing their country in this year’s World Championships, being hosted this time at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge pool this August.

The club hold junior sessions at Pembroke Leisure Centre on Monday and Wednesday evenings, plus training session at Haverfordwest Leisure Centre every Friday.

Club times are 8pm for juniors followed by seniors at 9-10.pm.
