There was a heart breaking end to the Wales 7s debut of Ryan Conbeer in Dubai last week as he was forced out of the tournament with injury.
Former Greenhill pupil Conbeer started the 28-7 defeat to New Zealand, but was forced off with a serious leg injury that ruled him out for the remainder of the weekend. The blow also stopped him from playing in the Cape Town leg of the IRB series this weekend.
Following the game with New Zealand in Dubai, Wales lost to USA, Spain, and France - before finishing the second day with wins over Zimbabwe and Japan.
Today's Pool D opponents in South Africa are Australia (round one semi-finalists), Scotland and Canada - all well established sides on the World Series.
Scarlets winger Conbeer has been replaced by Dragons' Joe Goodchild, whose spot as a travelling reserve will be filled by regional teammate George Gasson this weekend.
The Wales Women’s development squad meanwhile, finished 13th in the invitational tournament in Dubai, with Awen Prysor (Haverfordwest Ladies), Lleucu George and Maisie MacKenzie (Whitland Ladies) all involved.
Menawhile, Gethin Gibby (Narberth), Natalie Walsh, and Brittony Price (both Whitland Ladies) represented the Ponty Butchers who sent male and female sides to the invititational event in Dubai, with both sides having since headed to the Carribean for the Barbados 7s this weekend.
