The Flamingoes, the women’s section of the Carmarthen Warriors 7s side, headed to Swansea on the weekend to defend their Beach Rugby Wales title.
With both Natalie Walsh and Keeley Evans unavailable it was left to Whitland’s Delyth Davies to lead the two-time champions.
Despite having two current Welsh internationals in their ranks, the Flamingoes were forced to call upon squad photographer Gwenno Davies to make up the numbers in their first game against Porth.
The Rhondda ladies were comfortably overcome however 8-0.
With Penybanc’s Hannah Jones and Alisha Butchers helping out in the next game, Wattstown were put to the sword by the girls in pink.
Welsh 7s and full intentional Sioned Harries and beach rugby veteran Karen Mayze ran riot as the Rhonnda ladies were hammered 9-0.
With the Flamingoes coasting into the semi finals, it looked like a meeting with Penybanc Panthers awaited in the final. However, the well-organized Bambu Barbarians fronted by Welsh International Philippa Tuttiet stopped the Panthers in their tracks.
In the other semi the Flamingoes eased past Ynysybwl to set up a star-studded showdown against Bambu.
In a game where the Flamingoes dominated the possession and constantly threatened the Bambu line, it was the classy Tuttiet who broke free to cross between the posts and register the only score of the game
A few questionable refereeing decisions were the subject of some after match banter on social media. However the Flamingoes management were as ever optimistic looking back on the tournament and season in general.
An excellent performance in New Quay along with a Plate win in Frome have both helped to reinforce the Flamingoes name as a force in women’s sevens rugby.
Their dominance at Beach Rugby Wales over the three years since their formation cannot be disputed and they look to return on both grass and sand stronger than ever in 2016
Flamingoes Squad: Delyth Davies, Heather Rees, Sioned Harries (Whitland) Jodie Evans, Karen Mayze (Kidwelly) Kath Joseph (Skewen) Ffion Bowen (Maesteg Celtic) Alisha Butchers, Hannah Jones (Penybanc) Gwenno Davies (Unattached).
