The centenary of the black and white cattle breeds in Britain is celebrated in S4C’s farming and countryside programme Cefn Gwlad next Monday at 9pm with a look at the breeds in Wales.
Presenter Dai Jones meets top Welsh breeders of Friesian and Holstein cattle including Tom Phillips, of Cilrhedyn, Llanfyrnach, owner of the Pedran Herd of Holsteins, who has just been elected chairman of the Holstein UK Society.
Tom Phillips is proud of the way the Holstein breed, traditionally developed in the Netherlands, has made progress in Britain.
“The breed has been improved here year after year and we’ve succeeded in breeding excellent dairy cattle and animals that can compete in the top shows,” he tells Dai Jones.
In Carmarthenshire, Dai visits another award-winning Holstein breeder, Eifion Jones, of Llandyfaelog, whose Feithy herd has gained recognition both in the show ring and on-farm production and inspection assessments.
The traditional British black and white – the Friesian – is not forgotten. The programme opens with a visit to the highly regarded Ember herd of Friesians of Vaughan and Rosemary Jenkins, of Poyston Cross, near Haverfordwest.
