Pisgah Holstein Dispersal Huw Evans, Carmarthen reports: An attractive catalogue of predominantly pure imported bloodlines attracted buyers from Cornwall, Dorset, Hereford, Shropshire, Cheshire and Lancashire alongside Welshmen to give the Hughes family a wonderful day as they retire from over 50 years of dairy farming.
The combination of high yields, noted families with a good mix of red and whites saw bidders spending their money readily.
At 7,800gns the Goldwyn daughter, Rockset Goldwyn Rachel, an 87 point two-year-old joined the Cabal Herd of Haydn Vaughan and family at Tufton. A close relative, Pisgah Rachel 2 led the maiden section at 2,600gns to join Geoff and Jean Williams, Penrikka Herd at Hay on Wye, while Pisgah Rachel Red, due with her first in December, reached 3,800gns to Hughes, Llanrhystud, and Rockset Radius Rachel joined the Jones’ Feithy herd at Kidwelly for 3,600gns.
At 4,000gns the Brassington family from Roden, Shropshire, secured the Goldwyn sired Pisgah Hanna 13 a 86 point two year old followed at 3,500gns by Pisgah Hope Red 2 a second calver by September Storm joining the Plas Herd of Thomas, Carmarthen, on a day where 35 animals broke the 2,000gns barrier.
Averages: Cows (in milk and in calf) £2,288; in calf heifers £1743.76; served heifers £1,244.61; bulling heifers £1,164.55; calves £919.34. Overall 175 lots £1,817.65.
Carmarthen
October 21st
Dairy cattle (41): The mart saw numbers and prices take a rise at Carmarthen with over 14 heifers making £1,800 or more and top price coming in at £2,000.
Top price went to Mr Jones, Olchfa Farm for Olchfa Astrid 126, a superb pedigree first calver with an excellent history behind her.
She was followed by Mr Jones, The Elms and another pedigree first calver — Midwest Onside Crest 2. She made £1,920. In the commercial section top price came in at £1,900 and went to Mr Jones, the Elms, for a first calver giving 5.5 gallons daily.
Overall in the commercial section two cows were entered averaging £1,100 and 16 heifers averaging £1,651. While in the recorded section three cows were entered along with 20 heifers averaging £1,556 and £1,683.
Beef calves — 234. Average: Bull calves £191/heifer calves £189.

Dai Lewis Cyf Auctioneers reports as follows: Comparable numbers forward in all sections (1,163). Lambs saw a faster run. Stores again saw a fast run, which averaged 129.0 p/kg and peaked at 139.7p.
