An exemption on the rule preventing farmers using vehicles on waterlogged soil has been extended to allow late harvesting to be completed.
The Welsh Assembly has granted a further temporary exemption to the cross compliance standard for farmers who need to use mechanical equipment and vehicles on waterlogged soil to harvest cereals, oilseeds, protein crops and other vegetables.
The Assembly announced an exemption from the requirement after bad weather throughout the summer, which lasted until October 4th.
A spokesman said: “In view of the persistent wet weather conditions and its adverse effect on harvesting the Assembly has reviewed the situation and given a further temporary exemption from the requirement until October 25th (subject to review).”
The Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition standard prohibits farmers from carrying out mechanical operations and using motorised vehicles on waterlogged soil.
The cross compliance requirement is intended to prevent compaction and damage of waterlogged soils, which could make drainage and run-off problems worse when soils dry out .
The spokesman added: “A wet summer has made waterlogged conditions more prevalent than usual. The Welsh Assembly has considered the current circumstances in relation to both the economic and environmental effects of the wet weather and consequent waterlogging.”
Farmers are being urged to minimise their access to waterlogged areas for harvesting and should not start other activities, such as ploughing, until soil conditions are suitable.
Farmers should record any soil damage from harvesting conducted under the temporary exemption, and the necessary remedial action in their cross-compliance soil assessment record booklet.
Remedial action is essential to avoid future problems and farmers should take action as soon as possible before sowing the next crop.
