Country of origin should be included on all food labels and restaurant menus in the future, according to NFU Cymru.
The union's comments came in a letter written ahead of discussions by the European Parliament on food labelling regulations.
In a letter to Welsh MEPs NFU Cymru has expressed its disappointment that recent proposals stopped short of proposing mandatory country of origin labelling on food.
NFU Cymru president Dai Davies said: "Food labelling must provide accurate, clear and relevant information so as not to mislead, and to ensure informed consumer choice.
"Of particular importance in making a food purchasing decision is the availability of clear country of origin labelling. It already applies to beef and NFU Cymru would like to see this extended to all meats as well as to milk and dairy products."
