A group of dairy farmers whose actions prevented the closure of a west Wales milk factory, securing an outlet for their milk and saving dozens of jobs, have been honoured by the High Sheriff of Dyfed.
The West Wales Milk Suppliers were presented with a community award by Colonel Dai Davies, in recognition of their efforts to save the former Dansco factory.
The group was formed in 2006 when it became evident the company running the factory was experiencing financial difficulties.
It was financed by the 114 farmer suppliers and match-funded by the Welsh Assembly, with assistance from Carmarthenshire County Council and the NFU.
The group employed Tony Evans of Anderson's consultancy to act on its behalf.
"Many of the 114 farmers, as well as other creditors, were owed a substantial amount of money. It is much to the credit of the group, ably led by a very capable, enthusiastic and committed chairman, with the professionalism of Tony Evans and the commitment of the committee, that negotiations were eventually completed for a new buyer of the factory and agreements with regard to the money owed to the farmers and other creditors,'' said Colonel Davies.
"The effect of the group was to allow the takeover of the factory as a going concern.
"If this had not happened the gates would have closed and it would have been disastrous for the farmers, creditors and the surrounding area.'' The factory, which was bought by the Canadian company, Saputo, is now attracting new suppliers.
