The superiors of a soldier who died at Castlemartin Range on Wednesday have paid tribute to a cheerful and charismatic soldier.
Ranger Michael Maguire, of 1st Battalion - The Royal Irish Regiment, died following a live firing exercise.
Ranger Maguire joined the army just under two years ago and was deployed to Afghanistan in September 2010.
His Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Colin Weir said:
“The entire Battalion is deeply shocked by this tragic event and all our thoughts and prayers are with Ranger Maguire’s family at this difficult time.
“He was a deeply professional and likeable young man and will be sorely missed.”
His Company Commander, Major Richard Bell described him as “one of our best”:
“His loss has devastated everyone who knew him,” he added.
“Michael was always going to stand out from the crowd. Not only because he stood a towering 6’ 7’’ tall, but because of his vastly cheerful outlook on life, natural charisma and irrepressible good humour.
“All of this ensured that he was extremely popular throughout the company and his loss is keenly felt.”
An MOD spokesman added that the ministry’s thoughts were with Ranger Maguire’s family and friends.
He added that the matter is subject to a civil police investigation and it would be inappropriate to comment further while this is ongoing.
