A Haverforwest man, who was found with 154 diazepam tablets, was fined at Haverfordwest magistrates court last week.
John Michael Daley, aged 25, of High Street, admitted possessing 154 tablets when police searched his house on January 12th.
The court heard that Daley, who said the £77 worth of drugs was for his own personal use, had a history of drug convictions and was also in breach of a conditional discharge for disorderly behaviour.
Jonathan Webb, defending, said Daley had been self-medicating to stop his alcohol habit, and used the diazepam to take away the tremors and help him sleep.
Mr Webb said: “The doctor said Daley had an alcohol problem and that he wanted him to come off, but he didn’t prescribe him valium. So Daley self-prescribed.
“I am pleased to say that rather than going down that illegal road, he has sought better means.”
Mr Webb said Daley had made contact with a local alcohol and drug advisory service, and was soon to begin the detoxification process.
Daley was fined £55 for possession, and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 surcharge, by magistrates, who also ordered the destruction of the drugs.
