As a gymnastic coach in Milford Haven, Andrew Grey is used to setting youngsters on their way to sporting stardom – but it will be his turn to shine when he carries the Olympic torch.
The 62-year-old from Little Haven has been a coach at Milford Haven Gymnastics Club for more than 30 years and was also headteacher of Hakin Community School.
“I am so shocked that I will be carrying the Olympic torch but also so happy,” said Andrew, who will carry the flame through Haverfordwest on May 27th.
“Sport has played such a huge part of my life from being a PE teacher and then going on to work at Milford Haven Gymnastics Club.
“So in some respects carrying the Torch will mean that little bit more to me because I have such an affinity for sport and am so excited about the Olympics, even though I didn’t manage to get any tickets.
“It is a bit strange because I was into my sport when I was young and then went on to coaching so I thought my chances of being in these huge events had come and gone.
“But I really think that the Olympic torch relay is such an important thing because it brings local people and the community together so I am delighted that I will be a part of it.”
