Passengers on the Stena Europe from Fishguard to Rosslare faced a 21 hour delay as stormy weather stopped the ferry from docking in Ireland.
The boat left Fishguard at 2.45am yesterday (Wednesday) and tried to berth at Rosslare at the normal time of 6.15am. Strong winds prevented this and the ferry went back out, trying to berth again just over an hour later. Winds gusting up to 60 knots made this impossible.
The ship’s captain decided to take shelter at Ballytiegue, where the vessel remained until 10.30 pm. The captain tried again to berth the ferry but the wind was still gusting at 40 knots.
The ferry finally berthed successfully at 3.30 this morning and departed as normal for Fishguard at 9am.
A spokesman for Stena said that Ballytiegue was sheltered despite the strong winds and that passengers were well-looked after, given food, refreshments and a place to rest and kept updated by the captain.
