The S4C hit pubs series Straeon Tafarn will feature one of Pembrokeshire’s most famous pubs, The Dyffryn Arms, Cwm Gwaun on its show on Friday, 7 January, 9.00pm (English subtitles available).
The pub, better known as ‘Tafarn Bessie’ after its famous landlady Bessie Davies, is one of the most old-fashioned hostelries in Wales.
Presenter Dewi ‘Pws’ Morris finds out how Bessie Davies has succeeded in keeping the character of The Dyffryn Arms, which has remained almost unchanged for generations.
In the company of local characters and experts, as well as historian Dr John Davies, we will find out more about the pub and the area.
One of the highlights of the year in Cwm Gwaun is celebrating the Old New Year – yr Hen Galan.
Here they still welcome in the New Year on January 13 according to the old Julian calendar.
Pws discovers why they stick to the ancient calendar in Cwm Gwaun when everywhere else in Britain changed to the current Gregorian calendar in 1752!
Also, Pws finds out what the term ‘macsu’ means, why local people had to fight for the Preseli Hills and who exactly was Fyffe Robinson.
