Dear Editor, - I am asking local residents to complete the 2006 BUPA Great North Run in support of disability charity Leonard Cheshire.

The Great North Run is the biggest half marathon in the world with nearly 50,000 runners taking to the streets of Tyneside on Sunday, October 1st.

The ballot for places is now closed and the only way that runners can get a guaranteed place in the race is through a charity, so why not take on the challenge in support of Leonard Cheshire?

Leonard Cheshire will have a 300 strong team of runners on the day, all of whom are invited to the charity's post-race marquee for refreshments and a recuperating massage. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned runner, the events team will be on hand to support you every step of the way.

All Leonard Cheshire are asking for is a £36 registration fee and a commitment to raise £320 in sponsorship. Funds raised will help the charity to directly support over 21,000 disabled people in the UK.

To register for a guaranteed place, please call the events team today on 0870 4204301, email events@lc-uk.org or visit www.lc-uk.org/gnr
