RETURNING to learning has been made easier for two single mums from west Wales after they received £1,000 to help with their studying costs.

The pair received the money from a trust fund set up in memory of the late Swansea East AM Val Feld. The fund is administered by Chwarae Teg, Wales' leading economic development agency for women.

The bursary donates £1,000 each year to up to three single mothers, over the age of 25, pursuing a course of study.

Single mum Jayne Jones, aged 43, of Golwg-Y-Castell, Cardigan, is studying car maintenance and repair at Coleg Ceredigion. She will use her award to buy tools for her course and cover childcare costs.

Jayne, who aims to work in the car repair industry, first tried her hand at mechanics after signing up for a course organised by Chwarae Teg as part of their Ready SET Go initiative. The scheme was established to encourage more women into non-traditional training and employment. She said: "I see training as a mechanic as a challenge and a skill I can use to gain employment.

"It's also a skill I'd like to pass on to my sons when they are old enough to drive.

"Being a single parent on a low income, the money will help cover the cost of materials and tools for my course."

The second recipient is Alison Jones, 56, of Cilgerran, who will use her bursary to cover the cost of a course in traditional upholstery. Alison's ambition is to open an upholstery workshop and employ others.

Jayne and Alison received their cheques from Welsh Assembly Government Business Minister Jane Hutt and chief executive of Chwarae Teg Marcella Maxwell at the new Senedd building in Cardiff Bay.
