MR H. DAVIES NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA (formerly of Solva) The death occurred of Hayden Davies, of New South Wales, Australia, on April 1st, aged 90. A native of Solva, he spent his early years in Prendergast and Harbour House, Solva, where he joined his father, W. H. Davies, in his boat building business. He enlisted in the regular Royal Navy and spent most of his time in submarines as a chief petty officer, seeing wartime action in the Skagerrak, where his brother Walter was killed. He was awarded the George Cross Medal for his part in the defence of the island of Malta. In 1955, with his wife Joyce and their three children, he emigrated to Australia, where they all still live. He last visited Solva in 1995, visiting his family and many friends, who look back on his long and interesting life.
MR G. W. JENKINS SIMPSON CROSS The funeral took place on Friday, April 7th at Parc Gwyn Crematorium of Gildas Walter Jenkins, of 7A Castle View, Simpson Cross, Haverfordwest. His main interest was the CB radio and he was known to all as Carman. He was predeceased by his wife, Mair, only nine months ago. Principal mourners were: Idris and Linda, William and Lynne (sons and daughters-in-law); John (brother); Marcus and Susan (grandson and wife); Joanne and Mark (granddaughter and husband); Andrew and Jane (grandson and partner); Dylan (grandson); Faye (granddaughter); Daniel, Ben, Lauren and Liam (great grandchildren).
MRS L. E. THOMAS CRESSELLY The death occurred on March 21st of Mrs Leila Elizabeth Thomas, aged 78, at her home, Pangley Chase, Lawrenny Road, Cresselly. Born in Pembroke Dock, Leila was the only daughter of seven children of the late Meresah and John Brown, of Pembroke Dock. Leila worked in Duttons in Pembroke Dock in her early years. She married Cyril, a police constable from Cilgerran and they lived in several locations across the county, including Tenby. On Cyril's retirement they moved to Cresselly where they had many friends and enjoyed many happy times in the Cresselly Arms. She was predeceased by Cyril in 1999 and was earlier predeceased by their son, Gareth. Family left to mourn are: Derek, Peter and Glynda, Paul and Monica, Kara, Peter, Angelo and Dario, Dean, David, Emma and Cariad, Chris and Dana, Sharon, John and Alex, Alan and Denise (nephews and nieces); Joyce, Betty, Anne, Olive, Tommy, Freddy and Ann (sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law); Gwyneth, Ros and Peter (cousins); Margo, Jean Brookes (close family friend); and other family members and friends. The funeral took place on Thursday, March 30th at St Jeffrey and St Oswald church, Jeffreyston, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was conducted by Father Paul Davies and assisted by Rev David Hammond. At the service a tribute was paid to Leila by Maurice Cole, of The Cresselly Arms, Cresswell Quay. The bearers were Messrs Roger Knight, Billy James, Alan Hooper and Andrew Cole. Principal mourners were: Derek, Peter and Glynda, Paul and Monica, Kara, Peter and Angela, Dean, Joyce, Olive, Freddy and Ann, Gwyneth, Ros and Peter. Unable to attend were: David, Emma and Cariad, Chris and Dana, Sharon, John and Alex, Tommy, Betty and Anne. There were family flowers only but donations in lieu to St Jeffrey and St Oswald Church, Jeffreyston c/o W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd, Funeral Directors The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, who carried out the funeral arrangements.
MRS D. SOUTHERN PEMBROKE The funeral took place on Thursday of Doreen Southern, of 32 Montgomery Close, Monkton, who died at Withybush Hospital aged 78. Mrs Southern moved to Monkton in 1969 with her husband Ray and young family. She settled into the community, raised her family and found employment at Hilda Evans shop in Monkton. Mrs Southern was a family-loving woman, happiest in her own home with her children and grandchildren around her. Following her retirement she relished the experiences of travel, having visited Italy, Madeira and Malta with Ray. She spent her days quietly walking her dog and enjoying her love of crosswords. Predeceased by her husband Ray and son Michael, Doreen leaves to mourn: Val and Mike, Pam and Ray (daughters and sons-in-law); Robin, Rhiannon, Hayley and Owen (grandchildren); Glynis (daughter-in-law); Betty (sister-in-law); Debbie, David, Jayne, Jill, Ken, Keith and Geoff (nephews and nieces). Unable to attend were Trish (daughter-in-law); Tim, Martin and Stevie (step-grandchildren); John, Cath and Maureen (nephew and nieces); Doug and Josie (cousins); Barbara and Sid (friends) in West Midlands. Bearers were Mike and Ray (sons-in-law) and Robin and Owen (grandsons). The funeral service at Monkton Priory was conducted by Rev Martin Cox followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn and interment at Monkton cemetery. Funeral arrangements were carried out by John Roberts and Son, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock.
MR M. BLUNSDEN PEMBROKE The funeral took place on Friday, March 31st at Monkton Priory of Mr Mel Blunsden, of 1 South Terrace, Pembroke. Mr Blunsden died at his home on March 26th, aged 71. The Rev Martin Cox officiated at the service. Mr Blunsden is survived by his wife Pam. Mr Blunsden was a native of Monkton and had started work as a telegram boy after national service, then worked as a postman up until his retirement in Pembroke Dock Post Office. He was union secretary at Royal Mail for 30 years. He had also served in the Royal Horse Artillery. His main interests were snooker, gardening and was a member of Black Rabbit and Power Station clubs. Family left to mourn and principal mourners were his wife Pam; Stephen, Simon and Helen (sons and daughter); Laura, Sian and Kimberley, Sam and Jack, Yasemin, Zaina, Lee and Tara (grandchildren), together with all of Mel's brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law with their respective families. The bearers were Stephen (son), Roger Howells, Phil Drummond, Leslie Barnikel (work mates), Adrian Griffiths, Chris Gammon (neighbours). There were family flowers only, with donations for The Alzheimer's Society and Parkinson Society c/o Graham Thomas, 34 Charles Thomas Road, Pembroke Dock,SA72 6UR. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs E. C. Thomas and Son, Funeral Directors, 31 Stockwell Road, Pembroke Dock.
mr p picton tankersley (Formerly of Monkton) THE death occurred on Sunday, April 2nd of Mr Phillip Picton, formerly of Monkton. He leaves to mourn his wife, Jennifer, of 48 years and a grown-up family; sisters Margaret Sercombe and Enid Doran, of Pembroke and brother Joey Picton, of Burnley and nieces and nephews.
Mr I. MILES CROESGOCH The death occurred on Saturday, April 1st at Withybush Hospital, of Mr Idwal Miles, of 11 Penygroes Villas, Croesgoch. Aged 75, he was the husband of Rita - his wife of 54 years - father of Malcolm and the late Alan, father-in-law of Mim and Mari, grandfather of Mark and Vickie, Melanie and Paul, Lee, Matthew, Daniel and the late Gareth, great-grandfather of Lauren and Jordan, brother of Howard and the late Greta and Trevor and brother-in-law of Florrie, Letty and Eileen. Idwal was born and lived in the Croesgoch area all of his life. He worked at Fishguard Harbour, and later became charge man on the railway P. Way gang. He worked for the railway for over 44 years. He was a devoted family man, kind and generous and always willing to help anyone. He loved reading, gardening and watching his favourite sports, rugby and boxing and was also a keen member of Hoelion 8. He was a practical joker with a cheeky smile. He was very proud of his Army National Service Medal, which he had recently received although he waited 55 years to get it. The funeral took place on Thursday, April 6th at Croesgoch Baptist Chapel, followed by interment at Croesgoch cemetery. The large attendance was a tribute to Idwal's popularity. Officiating was Rev Jeffrey Eynon; the organist was Beryl Beynon. The bearers were Jeffrey and Lesley Jenkins, (nephews) Byron Reynolds, Gerald Salmon, Lyndon Richards and Alun Hughes. There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu towards Solva District Nurses Fund, c/o David Price, Hafan, Croesgoch, SA62 5JZ. Principal mourners were, Rita (wife); Malcolm and Mari (son and daughter-in-law); Mim (daughter-in-law); Mark and Vickie, Melanie and Paul, Lee, and Daniel (grandchildren); Howard (brother); Letty (sister-in-law); and many nephews, nieces and friends. Unable to attend was Eileen (sister-in-law). The funeral arrangements were carried out by David Price, Croesgoch.
MRS D. K. PETERSEN HASGUARD CROSS The funeral took place recently of Dora Kate Petersen, who died at Withybush Hospital on March 23rd, aged 82. She was the widow of Hans, who died eight years previously. Born in east Germany, she came to live in Milford Haven with daughter Steffi to be reunited with her husband in 1949. Their home was at Woodson Farm Cottage for several years, working as farm labourers and then went on to building work, Kate the labourer and Hans the builder. In 1955, they moved to Talbenny on the old RAF airfield converting the old power/generator building into a home and the other buildings into poultry sheds. This was Kate's strength and drive, her idea and passion. Later on a frozen food business was created, which became very successful until they both retired in 1992. She leaves to mourn her daughter Steffi; son-in-law Josiah; granddaughters Angela and Caroline and partner Neil; great-grandchildren Naomi and Joseph and her sister and best friend Elsa. Rev A. P. Johnson conducted the service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on Tuesday, March 28th. There were family flowers only with donations for the Velindre Hospital NHS Trust towards clinical trials for lymphoma treatment, which can be sent c/o Mrs E. C. Price, Meadowside, Portfield Gate, Haverfordwest, SA62 3LS. Funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and son, Haverfordwest.
MR W. L. JONES CARMARTHEN (formerly of Tregroes) William Lewis Jones died on Sunday, April 9th following an illness courageously borne. He died at his home, Brynamlwg, Lluest-y-Bryn Road, Carmarthen. Formerly of Cwm Gyfeile, Tregroes, he was the husband of Olga and a father, grandfather, brother and uncle. According to his wish, the funeral was a strictly private service. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. T. M. B. Lewis, funeral director, carried out the arrangements.
MRS C. M. DRUGAN/PROTHERO MONKTON The funeral took place last month at Monkton Priory Church, with interment at Monkton Cemetery, of Mrs Claire Maureen Drugan/Prothero, of 3 Back Terrace, Monkton, who had died on March 17th at the age of 74. Rev Martin Cox officiated at the service. She was predeceased by her husband and leaves to mourn Ken and Pauline Prothero and family (son); Keiron Prothero and family (son); Alan Prothero and family (son); Antony and Erica Prothero and family (son); Denise and Tony Gillespie and family (daughter); Christopher and Sue Drugan and family (son); Michelle Drugan and family (daughter); Steven Drugan and family (son). MRS I. M. JENKINS NEYLAND The death occurred on March 28th at Withybush Hospital, of Mrs Iris Maud Jenkins, of 9 Charles Street, Neyland. Mrs Jenkins was a native of Llanstadwell and was a housewife, mother and grandmother. Her interests were her family, reading, knitting, local history, Llanstadwell WI and Darby and Joan Club. She was also a lifelong believer who attended Llanstadwell Mission hall, Llanstadwell church and latterly Baptist chapel, Neyland. Predeceased by her husband, William Jenkins in October, 1994, Iris leaves to mourn: Hazel and David Thomas (daughter and husband); Mervyn and Pauline Jenkins (son and wife); Bernard Jenkins (son); Chris and Jan Nordoff, Philip Nordoff, Martin Nordoff, Steven and Julie Nordoff, Ben and Susie Jenkins, Mervyn Jenkins (grandsons and partners); Debbie and Martyn Rees, Sara Jenkins (granddaughters and partner); Hannah Scott, Joel and Madison Rees (great grandchildren); Alice Warlow (sister); Geoff and Sian Warlow, Marilyn and Ray Veasey (nephew, niece and partners). The funeral took place on Tuesday, April 4th at Llanstadwell church followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth, and the ashes were interred at Neyland Cemetery. The officiating minister was Rev Paul Flavell. Bearers were Christopher, Philip, Martin and Steven Nordoff, Benjamin and Mervyn Jenkins. Principal mourners were: Hazel and David Thomas, Mervyn and Pauline Jenkins, Bernard Jenkins, Christopher and Jan Nordoff, Philip Nordoff, Martin Nordoff, Steven and Julie Nordoff, Ben and Susie Jenkins, Mervyn Jenkins, Debbie and Martyn Rees, Sara Jenkins, Marilyn and Ray Veasey, Karen Warlow. Unable to attend were: Mrs Alice Warlow (sister); Mrs Jan Nordoff (granddaughter-in-law). There were family flowers only with donations to Pembrokeshire Alzheimers Association, c/o Mrs P. Jenkins, 30 Kensington Road, Neyland, SA73 1JL. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, Milford Haven.
MR A. CHILVERS HAVERFORDWEST Omitted from the report of Mr Albert Chilvers last week was that there were family flowers only. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent c/o Mr Phil Rogers, 5 Spencer Way, Haverfordwest, in aid of Alzheimers Society and Kidney Research.
