MRS N. M. TUCKER PEMBROKE DOCK The death occurred on Tuesday, March 21st of Mrs Nancy May Tucker, of Cross Park, Pembroke Dock. She was 95. Born in Park Street, Pembroke Dock, Nancy was baptised at St John's church at four weeks old, confirmed at 14, married there at 22 and finally her funeral took place at St John's on March 31st. Time spent away from the town included some early years when her father's position in the police force moved to Haverfordwest and they lived in the Castle there. The family returned to the dock when he retired. Then, when she married Tom, of the Essex Regiment, they were posted to Palestine and Egypt for a number of years until Nancy and their boys were sent home at the outbreak of the Second World War. Tom served throughout the war and returned safely to Britain only to die tragically in an accident. Nancy moved back to the dock and lived with her mother in Charlton Place and she devoted herself to bringing up the boys. By the 1960s the elder boys had left home and Nancy accompanied the youngest to Portsmouth before returning to Pembroke Dock. Nancy's funeral was followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, both conducted by Rev Vincent Gardner. Principal mourners were: Sherwin, Bill and John (sons); together with Gwenda (Bill's wife); Rebecca, Judith, Henry, Kylie and Darren (grandchildren). Unable to attend were Helen and Sophie. There were family flowers only, donations in lieu for St John's church to Graham Thomas, 34 Charles Thomas Avenue, Pembroke Dock. Funeral arrangements were carried out by E. C. Thomas and Son, 31 Stockwell Road, Pembroke Dock.

MR J. SCOURFIELD PEMBROKE DOCK (formerly of Carew Newton) Mr John Scourfield, of Gwyther Street, Pembroke Dock, died at West Wales General Hospital, Carmarthen, on March 27th. He was 74. A popular and much respected resident of Pembroke Dock, he settled in the town in 1952 following his marriage to Joyce Adams. Affectionately known to his older friends and acquaintances as 'Big John Toot of Carey', Mr Scourfield was the youngest of six sons. He served an apprenticeship as a stonemason in Tenby, and did two years national service with the RAF as an air-frame fitter. After demobilisation he joined George Argent and Sons, Pembroke, with whom he was employed for a number of years. During the 1960s and 70s he worked in partnership with Merlin Hughes, Meyrick Street, Pembroke Dock, running a successful contracting business. After running the business on his own for some years, Mr Scourfield joined the staff of the South Pembrokeshire District Council as a building maintenance inspector, a position he held until 1995 when he retired. Mr Scourfield was a raconteur of considerable ability and was recently interviewed for the 'Talking History of Carew' series. Mr Scourfield was a regular worshipper at St John's church, Pembroke Dock, and had been an enthusiastic and active member of the Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir for over 45 years. He loved singing and attended musical evenings at Pisgah chapel, Cresswell Quay, where he worshipped as a child. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Pembroke Dock Harlequins RFC and during the summer months he followed Carew Cricket Club. Last October he became a member of Pembroke Probus Club. Mr Scourfield was predeceased by his wife three years ago and he leaves two sons and a daughter, Gareth, Paul and Anne, with their respective families, and five grandchildren Angharad, Josh, Tom, Ben and Hannah. They, together with other family members and close friends, were the principal mourners. Unable to attend the funeral were Barbara (daughter-in-law); Lewis and Frances (brother and sister-in-law); Austin (brother-in-law); and a number of great nieces and nephews. The bearers were Gareth and Paul (sons), Phil Beynon (son-in-law), Tony Davies, John Price, Ron Lloyd, and John Gilbert (members of Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir). The funeral service on Tuesday was conducted by the rector, Rev Andrew Davies followed by burial in Llanion cemetery, Mr Scourfield being interred in the grave of his wife. There were family flowers only, but donations in lieu for Diabetes UK, Steffan Ward, West Wales General Hospital, Carmarthen, may be sent to John Roberts and Son, Bush Street, Pembroke Dock, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

MR B. J. B. LUKE AMBLESTON Omitted from the list of principal mourners in last week's obituary report of Mr B. J. B. Luke, of Ambleston, were Bethan and Stephen, Catrin and Huw (nieces and nephews). BAILEY TAVERNSPITE (formerly of Rosemarket) Mrs Leisa Bailey (nee Martin) died at the home of her mother at Templeton on February 24th, aged 37. She was the wife of Nic and the mother of Bethan, aged three. Leisa was the daughter of Lesley Belt and Robert Martin and the sister of Leigh and Rob Martin. Leisa was born at Barry and at three years old moved with her family to Pembrokeshire and lived at Cresselly and Martletwy before meeting Nic in 1989. They made their home with Nic's parents in New Moat before moving to Rosemarket and Tavernspite. At a young age Leisa was very keen on ponies and enjoyed music, playing the piano and violin. Ten years ago Leisa willingly postponed her wedding to donate bone marrow to her brother Leigh, who had contracted the life threatening disease aplastic anaemia. After her marriage Leisa passed her grade eight singing exam and enjoyed singing in the soul band The Shambelles immensely. All of this was before giving birth to her daughter Bethan. Leisa was a wonderful mother and enjoyed her daughter to the full. She loved children and they loved her, and her wish was to become a child minder. This came to a halt when she was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Leisa fought a brave battle for a year to stay with her beloved family. The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth on Saturday, March 4th. David Wheeler, a family friend, conducted the service and his daughter Sarah Beddis, who was a dear friend of Leisa, read 'She Is Gone' by David Harkins. The interment of ashes was carried out on March 6th at Templeton chapel cemetery, attended by close family. MR D. KIDD FREYSTROP Dennis Kidd, of New Road, Freystrop, died at home on March 22nd, aged 73. A native of Carlisle, Mr Kidd joined the army at 17, serving with the Welsh Regiment in Bengorzy, Cyprus, Germany and also fought in the Korean War. Dennis earned seven medals, some being for bravery. He spent seven years as a recruiting sergeant and served 20 years in the army. He was the son of Walter Sword Kidd and Mary Agnes Kidd, and his father was a master butcher. Dennis kept pigeons, and loved bird watching and fishing. He looked after his grandchildren, liked cooking and enjoyed his food and he also liked watching football. Family left to mourn are: Diana Kidd (wife); Charles Kidd (son); Eleanor Puhl, Melanie Blanchy and Marina Kidd (daughters); Kim Puhl, Louise Kidd, Aimey Puhl, Daisy Blanchy, Charles Blanchy, Georgia Williams, Gina Spraguo, and Oliver Spraguo (grandchildren); Dylan Kidd and Seren (great grandchildren). MR J. G. GRIFFITHS LETTERSTON The funeral took place on March 27th of Mr John George (Jack) Griffiths, of Station Road, Letterston. Mr Griffiths died at Withybush Hospital on March 21st. He was 83. During the Second World War he joined the Royal Navy and served on Merchant ships as a gunner. After the war, Jack was employed at RNAD Trecwn as a controller until he retired at 65. His main interests were his family, home and gardening. Family left to mourn are: Mabel (wife); Sheila (daughter); Derek and Susan, Brian and Jayne, Martin and Marilyn (sons and daughters-in-law); Nicholas, Matthew, Timothy, Rhys, Emyr, Caroline and Laura (grandchildren). MR J. T. HARRIES HAVERFORDWEST The funeral took place on March 31st at Parc Gwyn, Narberth, of Mr John Trevor Harries, of Rockleigh, Mill Bank, Haverfordwest. Mr Harries died at home on March 25th, aged 75. He was formerly of Victoria Park, Treffgarne, where he farmed with his wife Sheila for 47 years. He combined this with a full-time post with the county pest control team. Mr Harries loved animals and gardening. He retired in 1998 and continued his interest in gardening. Rev Geoffrey Eynon and Rev Paul Davies officiated. MRS M. E. POWELL CRUNDALE The funeral took place on April 5th at Parc Gwyn, Narberth of Mrs Mary Elizabeth (Molly) Powell, of Old School House, Crundale, who died on March 29th aged 93, at Withybush General Hospital. Canon G. Gwyther and Mr F. Elliott officiated. Mrs Powell was a native of Rudbaxton but had been housekeeper at Earl Malmesbury's Country Estate in Hampshire for 30 years before returning to Pembrokeshire. She was predeceased by her husband David Arthur Powell in 2005. Her main interests were whist and raising funds for St Michael's Church, Rudbaxton. She leaves to mourn Nita and Len (son and daughter-in-law); Diane and Roy, Juanita and Mike, Caroline and Mark (grandchildren and husbands); great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; Leslie and Gwenith Griffiths (brother and sister-in-law); nieces and nephews. The bearers were Roy and Anthony Ormond, Mike and Karl Allen, Mark Hutchings and Michael Griffiths. MRS J. E. PURTON PEMBROKE The funeral took place on April 1st at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth of Mrs June Elizabeth Purton of East Back, Pembroke. Mrs Purton died on March 26th at Withybush Hospital. The Rev Martin Cox officiated. Mrs Purton was born in Cheshire, but had lived in Wales since 1982. She had been a radiographer since 1949 and when she retired in 1975 she was a radiographer at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, Sussex. Her main interests were work, family, antique collecting, visiting and supporting charity shops and looking after her husband. Mrs Purton had assisted in the renovation of Castell Malgwyn Stables at Llechryd. Family left to mourn and principal mourners were George (husband); Nick (son); Karen (daughter); Cait (granddaughter); Callum, Geraint, Gethin (grandsons). MR E. HUXTABLE PEMBROKE DOCK The death occurred on March 3rd at Queen Alexandra Hospital Home for Disabled ex-Servicemen, of Ernest Huxtable, aged 93. Ernie was born in Morriston, Swansea, in 1912 and the family moved soon after to Pembroke Dock where his father George Huxtable set up butchers shops in both Bush Street and Dimond Street. He joined the Welsh Guards at 17 and served at Wellington, Chelsea and Aldershot barracks; the Tower of London and Windsor Castle. He was posted to Shanghai in 1934, serving two years with the Military Police. In 1939 he sailed to Gibraltar where he was stationed before going to France. He was captured near Dunkirk and spent five years in prisoner-of-war camps in Poland and Germany. After the war and discharge from the Welsh Guards he joined his father and brother, the late Tony Huxtable, in the family business. He moved to The Grotto, Freshwater East on marrying his late wife, Trudie and remained there until his stroke in 1988. He was a founder and secretary of Pembrokeshire's Welsh Guards Association branch and a life member of the Llanelli branch of the Dunkirk Veterans Association. During his time at the Queen Alexandra Home, Worthing, he attended the Trooping of the Colour and other occasions where he met up with friends. He also made two days trips to France organised by the home. He was a keen sportsman and never lost his interest in watching sports even when confined to bed in later years. The funeral took place on March 17th at Stackpole Elidor church, Stackpole followed by interment at Llanion Cemetery and was conducted by Rev Roger Jones. Bearers were members of the Welsh Guards, Bill Kellaway, Arthur Earles, Harry Lovering (lead), Brian Richards, Derek Greathead, Bill Lloyd and Joe Griffiths. Principal mourners were: Susan Davies (daughter); Richard Davies (son-in-law); Katharin and John Davies (grandchildren); Michael Green (stepson); Maisie Green (stepdaughter-in-law); Julia, Lindsay, Charlotte and families (step grandchildren); Richard Huxtable (nephew). MRS D. K. PETERSON HASGUARD CROSS The funeral has taken place of Dora Kate Peterson who died at Withybush Hospital on March 23rd, aged 82 She was the widow of Hans, who died eight years ago. Born in East Germany, she came to live in Milford Haven with daughter Steffi to be reunited with her husband in 1949. Their home was at Woodson Farm Cottage for several years as farm labourers before Hans went on to building work. In 1955 they moved to Talbenny on the old RAF airfield, converting the old power/generator building into a home and the other buildings into poultry sheds. This was Kate's strength and drive, her idea and passion. Later on a frozen food business was created which was successful until they both retired in 1992. She leaves to mourn her daughter Steffi; son-in-law Josiah; great-granddaughter Angela; Cardine and partner Neil; and great grandchildren Naomi and Joseph and her sister and best friend Elsa. Rev A. P. Johnson conducted the service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on Tuesday, March 28th. Funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and son, Haverfordwest.

MR C. BEVAN NARBERTH The funeral took place on Monday, March 27th of Cliffy Bevan, of Little Greenway, Narberth. Cliffy, who was 78, died at Withybush Hospital on March 20th after a short illness. One of nine children, he was born in Mill Lane, Narberth in 1927. He had lived at Narberth Bridge all his life, but for the past five years had resided at Little Greenway. He was a builder by trade, and was very proud of the fact that at the age of 18, he built his own house at Narberth Bridge. A keen rugby player in his younger days, Cliffy played hooker for Narberth. He retained his interest in Narberth rugby and was a keen follower until his death. His wife May died in 1955 and he was a father to Susan and Caroline. A devoted family man, he delighted in the company of his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. The service took place at St Andrews church, Narberth and was conducted by Rev P. Lewis and Rev A. Chiplin. The organist was Dr G. Rees, and a tribute was read by Mr G. Searle. Interment was in the churchyard. The bearers were Nick MacPhee, Ian Hough (grandsons), Wyn Phillips, Kevin John, Pip Phillips and Chris Viggers. Principal mourners were: Susan and Ken, Caroline and Gareth (daughters and sons-in-law); Cath and Ian, Nick and Julie, Hannah (grandchildren); Joyce Roberts (sister); Edith Bevan (sister-in-law); nephews and nieces and friends. MR A. C. D. THOMAS PENNAR Chris Thomas, aged 73, recently passed away at home after a short illness. He was born at Long Mains, Monkton and was a Korean War veteran. Throughout his career he worked in the motor industry and was particularly interested in rally sports. After his retirement from Silcox Coach Company his interests centred around his home and family. The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn and his ashes will rest with his parents at Monkton Cemetery. The bearers were Brynley Wilcox, Gareth Watts, Karl Davies-Thomas and Sam McKeand. Chris leaves to mourn: Pam (wife); Kevin and Paul (sons); Kim (daughter); Linda (daughter-in-law); Lesley McKeand and Gareth Watts (step-children); together with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his sister Lucy, he leaves his sister Amy and brother-in-law John in Adelaide, and sister Dorothy and brother Ken.

MR A. CHILVERS HAVERFORDWEST The death occurred on March 15th at Brooklands Nursing Home, Sandy Hill, Saundersfoot, of Albert Chilvers, of 11 Shelley Road, Haverfordwest, aged 82 A native of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Albert joined the Royal Navy at the age of 18. After six years he joined the Beechams group and went on to become manager of Corona factory, Haverfordwest, where he worked until his retirement around 1980. Albert was a keen pigeon fancier, actively involved with the local homing society and travelling throughout the county. He made many lifelong friends and enjoyed gardening. Family left to mourn are: Dorothy (wife); Phil and Sarah Rogers (stepson and stepdaughter-in-law); Ray and Jane (son and daughter-in-law); Caroline and Peter Griffiths (stepdaughter and stepson-in-law); Mark and Steven Chilvers (grandsons); Olivia and Aled Rogers (granddaughter and grandson); Anthony and Owen Thomas (step grandsons); Kriss and Jane Chilvers (nephew and niece); Leighton Davies (nephew). MR H. SMITH WOODSTOCK There was a large attendance at Woodstock CM Chapel on March 18th for the funeral of Hugh Smith, of Bigws Farm, Woodstock who died at UHW Cardiff on March 13th , aged 60. Hugh was born at South Nolton Farm, Nolton and at the age of eight he moved to Merryboro Farm, Wiston. Here he farmed with his father until his marriage to Anita in 1971, when he moved to Bigws Farm, Woodstock. As well as farming, Hugh was a successful builder and lately he had renewed this interest, along with cabinet and furniture-making. He took great delight in making bespoke pieces of furniture for his home and those of his daughters. Hugh was a well liked and popular member of the community and was involved with Treffgarne farmers discussion group and the Ambleston Historical Society. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, making toys and games for them. Hugh had battled hard against leukaemia and had shown great dignity and strength through some very difficult months. He leaves to mourn his wife Anita, daughters Jayne, Sharon and Katie, his son-in-law Geraint and grandchildren Catrin, Carwyn, Owen, Hedd and Menna. Interment took place at Woodstock Cemetery. The bearers were Ernest Harries, Russel Evans, Gwynant Lewis, Pat Morrello, Gareth Williams and Glyn John. Principal mourners included Anita (wife), Sharon and Geraint (daughter and son-in-law), Jayne and Paul, Katie and Michael (daughters and partners), Catrin (granddaughter); Billy and Betty Smith, Eric and Caroline Smith, Tom and Mary Smith, Ken and Ruth Smith (brothers and sisters-in-law), Sue and lan Irwin (sister and brother-in-law), Dave and Janet Bennett (step-brother and sister-in-law), Austin and Mona Morris, Gwilym and Carol Morris (brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law), Dougie Smith (uncle), Glenys and Emrys Davies (aunt and uncle), Dilwyn and Mary Roberts (cousins), Anna and David, Lucy, Sian and Paul, Tracey, Steven, Sian and Dave, Danielle, Ann and Geoff, Vivian, leuan and Suzzanne, Moira, Elaine and John, Kevin and Nicola, Gwawr and Daniel (nieces and nephews), together with cousins too numerous to mention. Unable to attend the funeral were: Betty Smith (stepmother), Eira Owen (aunt), Anthony, Tommy, Jenny, Linda, Geraint and Sarah (nieces and nephews). The funeral was officiated by Rev William Owen, assisted by Rev Richard Williams, Rev Geoffry Eynon, Rev David Rees, Rev Eirian Wyn Lewis, Rev Carl Williams, Rev Gwyn Rodgers, Rev Paul Davies, Mr John Evans, Mr Alex Maine and Mr Adrian Coombe. Organists were Mrs Margaret Griffiths and Mrs Dilys Reynish. Funeral arrangements were carried out by William Lewis, Ford Bungalow, Wolfscastle.

MRS J. M. JENKINS CRUNDALE The funeral took place on March 23rd at Crundale United Reformed Church of Jean Margaret Jenkins, of Crundale Hook Farm, Crundale, with cremation at Parc Gwyn. Mrs Jenkins died on March 19th at Fairfield Nursing Home, Johnston, where she had been a resident for two years. The Rev Malcolm Shapland officiated and the organist was Mr Ivor Swales. She was predeceased by her husband Frederick James Jenkins. During her working life she was a nursing sister and had trained at the County Hospital. She worked as a nursing sister in Cardiff and Cheltenham Hospitals. She retired in 1985 and her main interests were the 60s Club, the Women's Institute, knitting and Crundale United Reformed Church. Family left to mourn are: Elgar Webb, New Zealand (sister and family); Bronwen Jenkins (sister-in-law); Jack Jenkins (brother-in-law); nieces and nephews. The bearers were Raymond Roach and Brian Roach, Owen Thomas and Paul Jenkins. Principal mourners were Helen Webb (niece); Bronwen Jenkins (sister-in-law); Jack Jenkins (brother-in-law); Mrs Betty Roach (friend) and nephews and nieces. The caterers were Elfryn Williams. Messrs Roy Folland and Son Funeral Directors carried out the funeral arrangements.

MR T. K. LEWIS GLOUCESTER Ken Lewis (formerly of Haverfordwest) died at his home at Upton St Leonards, Gloucester on March 20th after a long illness, aged 72. After discharge from the RAF in 1956, he returned to his home in Cromie Avenue, but eventually took up employment with the Gloucester Aircraft Company. He remained there for many years before he took retirement on grounds of ill health. He is survived by his wife Angela and his brother Roy, from Burry Port. The funeral took place at the Gloucester Crematorium on Wednesday, March 29th.
