MRS H. LEESE NARBERTH The death occurred on March 20th at Withybush Hospital, of Mrs Hilary Leese, of 25 Springfield Park, Narberth (formerly of The Angel, Narberth). She was 75. She was the wife of Alex, mother of Helen and Andrew, grandmother of Emma, Katy, Fay, Heather and Gareth, mother-in-law of Jim and Gill and sister of Morfydd, Elsie and Roy. Hilary was the eldest of four children of the late William and Catherine Thomas, of Northmead, Narberth. After attending Narberth Grammar school she began her general nurse training at the North Middlesex Hospital, London. It was in London that she met Alex and they married at Tabernacle chapel, Narberth, in June 1953, soon after she obtained her SRN. They made their home in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, where they brought up their two children Helen and Andrew. In the years prior to moving to The Angel, Narberth, Hilary continued her nursing career, gaining several diplomas in different aspects of nursing. Following 13 years at The Angel with their daughter and son-in-law, Hilary and Alex retired in October 2001 to 25 Springfield Park. Hilary will be sadly missed by all her family and many friends. The funeral took place on Wednesday, March 29th, at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was conducted by Rev Elwyn John assisted by Rev Llinos Edwards (Hilary's cousin) with a tribute by County Councillor Wynne Evans. The high esteem in which Hilary was held was borne out by the very large congregation, many of whom had travelled long distances. The bearers were her five grandchildren. Principal mourners were: Alex (husband); Helen and Jim Tennant (daughter and son-in-law); Andrew and Gill Leese (son and daughter-in-law); Emma, Katy, Fay and Heather Leese (granddaughters); Gareth Tennant (grandson); Morfydd Morgan, Elsie and Eifion Evans and Roy Thomas (sisters, brother and brother-in-law); Freddy and Pat Leese (brother-in-law and sister-in-law); nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. There were flowers from the grandchildren only, with donations to either ward ten, Withybush Hospital or Narberth Health Centre, c/o W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd, The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

MR J. S. PRYCE LETTERSTON The death occurred on March 22nd at Withybush Hospital, of Mr James Sylvester Pryce, of 7 St Giles Court, Letterston, Haverfordwest. He was 75 and had been a patient at Withybush Hospital for ten weeks. Mr Pryce was a native of County Sligo, Ireland, and worked as a coffin-maker and carpenter, wood machinist, trolley bus driver in London, telecommunications engineer and public house and social club manager. His main interests were reading, current affairs, television and football. Family left to mourn are: Joan Pryce (wife); Michael and Stephen Pryce (sons); Heather and Tricia Pryce (daughters-in-law); Melanie, Alastair, Vanessa, Sarah and Zara (grandchildren). The funeral took place on Tuesday, March 28th at St David and St Patrick RC church, Haverfordwest followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn and was conducted by Father McGreal. The bearers were Michael, Stephen, Alastair Pryce and Mark Evans. Principal mourners were: Joan Pryce (wife); Ethna Paing (sister); Michael and Stephen Pryce (sons); Heather and Tricia Pryce (daughters-in-law); grandchildren. There was immediate family flowers only. Donations were in lieu of flowers to the coronary care unit, Withybush Hospital, c/o Mr William Lewis, Ford Bungalow, Wolfscastle, Haverfordwest, who also had charge of the funeral arrangements.

MR B. J. B. LUKE AMBLESTON The death occurred on March 17th at Ridgeway Nursing Home, Llawhaden, of Mr Benjamin John Bertie Luke, of Highbury, North Court Farm, Ambleston, Haverfordwest. He was 74. Mr Luke had been a resident at Ridgeway Nursing Home for about five-and-a-half weeks and had previously been a patient on ward four, Withybush Hospital for three-and-a-half months. Mr Luke was a native of Penymynydd Mawr, Puncheston, Haverfordwest, and upon leaving school he had helped to run the family farm. The eldest of five children of the late Hugh Phillips Luke and Dinah Lorina Luke, of Penymynydd Mawr, Bertie had assumed responsibility for the running of the farm together with his brother Archie, assisted by his sister Mair, upon his father's death in 1963. His brother Archie predeceased him suddenly in 1992. Bertie's health was of great concern at this time and he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, which some nine years later saw him give up his beloved farm and move briefly to Maesgwyn, his sister's home until his bungalow, Highbury was ready. He fought his illness with great courage and dignity and never complained. Bertie will always be remembered for his cheeky smile, his kindness and generosity. He was a pillar of the community being a member of the community council for 19 years, chairman in 1986 to 1987, founder member of Puncheston recreation committee and treasurer for around 25 years and was still chairman to the burial board at the time of his death. He took great pride in his community and contributed generously to its upkeep as he did with the village cemetery. His main interest was his home and family. He was an avid supporter of Arsenal FC and enjoyed watching them on TV. He also loved snooker. He was a lifelong member of Bethel CM chapel, Puncheston, deacon for many years and past treasurer, until his ill health made it impossible to continue. He enjoyed the company of his nephews and nieces and his great-nephews and nieces and loved teasing them all. He was affectionately known as Bwrt to them. The funeral took place at Bethel CM chapel, Puncheston, on Thursday, March 23rd followed by interment at Puncheston village cemetery and was conducted by Rev William Owen, assisted by Rev Geoffrey Eynon, Rev Carl Williams, Rev Gwyn Rogers, Rev Geraint Davies and Rev Llinos Edwards. Apologies for absence was received by Rev Richard Williams. The organist was Margaret Griffiths. Bearers were Richard Vaughan, Peter Morse, Graham Harries (former neighbours), Robert Vaughan, David Morgan and Hugh Bevan (nephews). MRS E. M. MORGAN CLARBESTON ROAD The death occurred on March 23rd after a three-week stay at Withybush Hospital, of Mrs Elsie May Morgan, of North Lamboro, Clarbeston Road, aged 77. A native of Henry's Moat, Elsie married in 1947 and lived at Clarbeston Road until her death, where she had farmed with her husband Campbell. Her interests were her flower garden, home cooking, knitting and her beloved dogs. She was also a member of Wiston CM chapel. Family left to mourn are: Campbell (husband); John (son). The funeral took place on March 30th at Wiston CM chapel followed by interment and was conducted by Rev T. Arwyn Thomas. The organist was Ruth Phillips. The bearers were Graham Roberts, Dylan Davies, Wyn Jones and Adrian Rees. Principal mourners were: Campbell Morgan (husband); John Morgan (son); Jill and Chris Jones, Margaret and Tim, Monica and Graeme (nieces and nephews); Edryd Lewis (cousin). MR R. P. DAVIES NARBERTH The death occurred on March 23rd at Ridgeway Nursing Home, Llawhaden, of Mr Roland Phillips Davies, of 8 Hill Park, Narberth. Mr Davies was 83 and had been a resident at Ridgeway Nursing Home for 14 months. Born at Martin Hill West Farm, Martletwy, in 1922, Roland moved to Templeton Farm in 1942, working on the farm until the death of both his parents in 1967. Following his marriage in 1968 he worked at Pembroke Power Station among others. In 1975 he started work at Dairy Crest Creamery in Whitland working in both the powder and butter packing departments until he retired in 1987. He served as a member of the local Home Guard and his main interests were gardening, crosswords and DIY, before his health deteriorated. He also liked spending time as a family and adored his two cats. Family left to mourn are: Marjorie (wife); Avice (daughter); Glenys (wife of his late brother Hugh); Mair (wife of his later brother William); Tegwen, Huw, Rhys and Sian (nieces and nephews). The funeral took place on Thursday, March 30th at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was conducted by Rev Hywel Brown. Bearers were Graham Thomas, Arthur Evans, John Jones and Gavin Wright. MRS W. M. LUCAS KILGETTY The death occurred on March 20th at ward ten, Withybush Hospital, of Mrs Winifred Mary Lucas, of 19 James Park, Kilgetty, aged 88. Mrs Lucas had been a patient at Withybush Hospital for two weeks. Mrs Lucas was a native of Redberth and was predeceased by her husband, Bernard Lucas, and her only son, Keith, aged 31, in September 1974. She leaves to mourn and principal mourners were: Maud (sister); Harcourt (brother); Dennis and Lynne (brother and partner); John (brother-in-law); Ann (daughter-in-law); Hilary and Ann (sisters-in-law); nephews, nieces and partners; great-nephews, nieces and partners; great-great-nephews and nieces. The funeral took place on March 27th at Carew Wesley Methodist chapel followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, and was conducted by Rev Anthony Gregory. MRS H. V. EMMANUEL BEGELLY The death occurred on Saturday, March 18th at Withybush Hospital, of Mrs Hannah Vera Emmanuel, of Fir Grove, Begelly, aged 86. Mrs Emmanuel had been a patient at Withybush Hospital for two weeks. Mrs Emmanuel was from St Clears and in her younger days she worked as a housekeeper and later as a farmer's wife in St Clears and Reynalton until her husband, Will Emmanuel, died in 1969, when Vera made her home at Fir Grove, Begelly. Her main interests were Begelly Golden Age Cancer Support Group, Pembroke Dock, Narberth Day Centre, holidays with friends and in her younger days she enjoyed knitting, sewing and embroidery and singing. Vera also attended Bethel Baptist chapel. She was brought up in a Welsh-speaking home and had a great love for the language. Family left to mourn are: Lilian, Maureen, Amelia, David and Wynne (nieces, nephews and their families); together with other family members and friends. The funeral took place on Friday, March 24th at Bethel Baptist chapel, Loveston, followed by interment at the graveyard. The officiating ministers were Rev Donald Davies, Rev Frank Goodwin, Rev Hywel Brown and Rev Huw Michael and the organist was Hugh Tribe. MRS F. S. PHILLIPS PEMBROKE (Formerly of Haverfordwest) The death occurred on March 21st at Withybush Hospital, of Mrs Florence (Flossy) Sylvia Phillips, of Bush Nursing Home, Pembroke and formerly of 39 Scotchwell View, Haverfordwest. Flossy was 82 and had been a patient at Withybush for 12 days. Born in Haverfordwest, Flossy worked in the fish market on the Fishguard Road, Haverfordwest, during her early years and later she worked as a postwoman. She then met her husband-to-be Bryn Phillips, the well-known painter and decorator and who also worked for Everest Double Glazing. Flossy and Bryn, after living in Prendergast, moved to the prefabs in Scotchwell View, Haverfordwest and then to 39 Scotchwell View, where they lived happily for over 25 years. Flossy was predeceased by Bryn in 1981 and was earlier predeceased by her sister Mrs Dolly Codd (wife of Freddie Codd) over 20 years ago. Her main interests were her family and friends, she was devoted to her former husband Bryn and son Roger. She then became a grandmother to Andrew and Nicola and a great grandmother to Anais (the daughter of Andrew and Lisa). Flossy was well-known for her home-brewing and warm welcome. Family left to mourn are: David James (nephew); John and Penny Codd (nephew and wife); Andrea and Phil White (niece and husband); Maureen and Tom Perse (niece and husband); Mike and Maureen Codd (nephew and wife); Miss Caroline Perse, Mrs Corinne Codd, Helen and Ray Hughes (niece and husband). The funeral took place on March 27th at St David's church, Prendergast, Haverfordwest followed by interment at Prendergast cemetery and was conducted by Canon Geoffrey Gwyther. Bearers were Roger Lewis, Martin Davies, Roger Lewis and John Eaton. Principal mourners were: Roger and Judith Phillips (son and daughter-in-law); Andrew and Lisa (grandson and fiance); Nicola and Paul (granddaughter and fiance); Anais (great-granddaughter). MR T. J. HUGHES HAVERFORDWEST The funeral took place on March 20th, at St Thomas Church, Haverfordwest, with cremation at Parc Gwyn, of Mr Thomas James Hughes, of 40 Priory Avenue, Haverfordwest. Mr Hughes died on March 13th at Withybush Hospital - the same day he was admitted. He was 80. Canon Derek Evans officiated at the service. Mr Hughes was born in City Road, Haverfordwest and worked for 54 years as a motor mechanic for A. Phillips and Son, Jubilee Gardens, Haverfordwest and then for Minster Diesels of Merlins Bridge until he retired aged 68 to look after his ill wife. Tom served five years in Egypt and Israel in the REME as an HGV driver. It was while stationed in Yorkshire that Tom met Edna and they married in 1950 at Selby Abbey. Tom's main interests were his wife Edna who he lovingly cared for, his children, grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed photography and followed Formula One motor racing and enjoyed classical music. Tom had many skills, including TV and radio repairs. He encouraged lots of local young mechanics. Tom was from an old Haverfordwest family born in City Road and, apart from his time in the Army, had lived here all his life. He was a quiet, helpful man. He is survived by his wife Edna Lucy Hughes. Mr A. JENKINS TENBY The service took place at St Mary's Church, Begelly, on Monday, March 13th, of Andrew Jenkins, aged 41, who was tragically lost at sea while lobster fishing on Calon Mor, the boat he owned and skippered. Andrew spent his early years at Bank Farm, Cosheston, moving with his family when he was six to Penarth Farm, where he was brought up. He was educated at Pentlepoir Primary and Greenhill schools. As a teenager Andrew was a very competent shore fisherman and gained his Welsh blazer when he fished in international matches. His entire working life was spent on the sea, working out of Saundersfoot and Tenby harbours. He also spent several years on ocean-going tugs, travelling worldwide. Latterly he had met and married Paula and settled back in Pembrokeshire where they had bought the potting boat Calon Mor, which was based at Milford Marina, from which Paula and Andy ran a very successful lobster and crab potting business. Chief mourners were: Paula, Yvonne, David, Alvin, Phil and Eilidh, Katie and Mike, Ginny and Steven, Libby and Eifion, TC and Emma, Tara and Kelly, Jean and Eric, Chris and Alan, Linda and Steve, Sheila, Angie, Desmond and Sandra, Juliet, Val and Peter, Graham and Brenda, Erica and Mike, Lisa and Rob, Mike and Hayley, Mal, Bethan and Molly, Amy, Ben and Tom, Lori and George, Joshua and Iwan, and other members of his extended family including cousins and step-nephews. The funeral service was conducted by Rev Canon Michael Butler and Rev Martin Cox, the organist was Mair Jenkins and the bearers were members of the fishing community - Ryan Huddleston, Ian Wisby, Jerry Percy and Greg Philpot. Tributes were paid to Andrew by his brother, Philip; Jerry Percy, Fishermen's Association and Mike Morrison, crewman and friend. The service was followed by a private cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth. Andrew's ashes will be scattered at sea. MRS G. M. RODERICK PEMBROKE DOCK The death occurred on Wednesday, March 15th at South Pembrokeshire Hospital, Pembroke Dock, of Mrs Gladys Mary Roderick, of Bellevue Terrace, Pembroke Dock, aged 94. Mrs Roderick had been a patient at South Pembrokeshire Hospital for a few weeks. Formerly of Swansea, Gladys had lived in Pembroke Dock for many years. She was a housewife. Predeceased by her husband Kelsey Roderick in October 1995, distant relatives left to mourn and principal mourners were: Bron, Roger, Vivian, Gareth and their families. The funeral took place on Friday, March 24th at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, and was conducted by Rev Andrew Davies. Bearers were Gavin Wright, Arthur Evans, John Jones, and Graham Thomas. Principal mourners were: Bron, Roger, Vivian, Gareth and their families. The funeral arrangements were carried out by E. C. Thomas and Son, funeral directors, 31 Stockwell Road, Pembroke Dock.

MR B. E. JONES HAVERFORDWEST The funeral took place on Thursday, March 16th, at St Thomas church with interment at City Road Cemetery, of Benjamin Evan Jones (Ianto), of Augustine Way, Haverfordwest, who died at Withybush Hospital on March 11th, aged 80. Canon Derek Evans and Bishop Ivor Rees officiated. Family left to mourn are: Susan (daughter); Terry (son-in-law); Thomas (grandson); Harold and Glenys Jones (brother and sister-in-law); Tina Haynes (sister); John and Margaret Jones, Emlyn and Enid Jones (brothers and sisters-in-law); Jane (sister); William and Marianne Cousins (brother-in-law and sister-in-law); and numerous nieces and nephews. There were family flowers with donations in lieu to the Normandy Veterans Association and chest unit at Withybush Hospital. Funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son.

MR LL. N. H. George FISHGUARD An eminent north Pembrokeshire solicitor who also served as Coroner and as a High Court Recorder during his distinguished career, has died aged 80. Mr Llewellyn Norman Havard George, principal for many years of the well-known family firm of V. J. G. Johns and Son, was an advocate of great eloquence, gravitas and skill, who was in great demand at the height of his powers as a defence solicitor throughout south and west Wales. His command of language, his knowledge and his sense of humour also made him a popular after-dinner speaker. Mr George joined the local law firm after qualifying in 1949 when his brother-in-law, the late Captain Graham Johns was in the armed services after the Second World War. It was to have been a temporary role, but he remained in the practice and in Fishguard for the rest of his career. When he retired at the age of 65 after over 40 years in practice, he continued as a consultant and to act for long-standing clients. He was a past president of both the Pembrokeshire and West Wales Law Societies, and chairman of the No. 5 South Wales Law Society Legal Aid Committee. A former President of Fishguard Rotary Club, he was a keen playing member and past president of Newport Golf Club, and a supporter of many local organisations. With the retirement of Mr H. Llwyd Williams he became north Pembrokeshire Coroner, and deputy Pembrokeshire Coroner to Mr John F. Johnson when the posts were merged. He was a Recorder on the Wales and Chester Circuit and his judgment, sense of fair play and incisive insight of the cases on which he adjudicated, in Chester and also in the Newport and Cardiff areas, earned him great admiration and respect. He had been chairman of the Agricultural Land Tribunal of Wales and of the Rent Assessment Panel for west Wales for many years. He was also a past member of Fishguard and Goodwick Chamber of Trade and Tourism and a Burgess of the Court Leet of his native Newport. Mr George, of Four Winds, Tower Hill, Fishguard, leaves to mourn his wife, daughter and four grandchildren. The funeral took place at St Mary's Church, Fishguard. followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium.

MR H. SMITH WOODSTOCK There was a large attendance at Woodstock CM Chapel on Saturday, March 18th for the funeral of Hugh Smith, of Bigws Farm, Woodstock who died at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, on March 13th, aged 60. Hugh was born at South Nolton Farm, Nolton and at the age of eight moved to Merryboro Farm, Wiston. Here he farmed with his father until his marriage to Anita in 1971, when he moved to Bigws Farm, Woodstock. As well as farming, Hugh was a successful builder and lately had renewed this interest, along with cabinet and furniture making. He took great delight in making bespoke pieces of furniture for his home and those of his daughters. Hugh was a well-liked and popular member of the community and was involved with Treffgarne farmers discussion group and the Ambleston Historical Society. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, making toys and games for them. Hugh had battled hard against leukaemia and had shown great dignity and strength through some very difficult months. He leaves to mourn his wife Anita; daughters Jayne, Sharon and Katie; son-in-law Geraint and grandchildren Catrin, Carwyn, Owen, Hedd and Menna. Interment took place at Woodstock Cemetery. Principal mourners were Anita (wife); Sharon and Geraint (daughter and son-in-law); Jayne and Paul, Katie and Michael (daughters and partners); Catrin (granddaughter); Billy and Betty Smith, Eric and Caroline Smith, Tom and Mary Smith, Ken and Ruth Smith (brothers and sisters-in-law), Sue and lan Irwin (sister and brother-in-law), Dave and Janet Bennett (step-brother and sister-in-law), Austin and Mona Morris, Gwilym and Carol Morris (brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law), Dougie Smith (uncle), Glenys and Emrys Davies (aunt and uncle), Dilwyn and Mary Roberts (cousins), Anna and David, Lucy, Sian and Paul, Tracey, Steven, Sian and Dave, Danielle, Ann and Geoff, Vivian, leuan and Suzzanne, Moira, Elaine and John, Kevin and Nicola, Gwawr and Daniel (nieces and nephews), together with cousins too numerous to mention. Unable to attend were Betty Smith (stepmother), Eira Owen (aunt), Anthony, Tommy, Jenny, Linda, Geraint and Sarah (nieces and nephews). The funeral was officiated by Rev William Owen, assisted by Rev Richard Williams, Rev Geoffry Eynon, Rev David Rees, Rev Eirian Wyn Lewis, Rev Carl Williams, Rev Gwyn Rodgers, Rev Paul Davies, Mr John Evans, Mr Alex Maine and Mr Adrian Coombe. Organists were Mrs Margaret Griffiths and Mrs Dilys Reynish. There were family flowers only, with donations to the haematology unit, ward C1 University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, care of John Griffiths, Y Garn, Ambleston. Funeral arrangements were carried out by William Lewis, Ford Bungalow, Wolfscastle.

MRS S. F. A. BALDWIN LAMPHEY The funeral took place recently of Mrs Susan Frances Ann Baldwin, of Westhill, Lamphey, who died on February 25th, at Withybush Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was 56. Born in 1950, Sue was the second child of Billy and Brenda Phillips, of 1 St Anne's Crescent, The Green, Pembroke. She was the wife of Butch Baldwin; mum to Carl, Claire and Jamie and nanny to Betsy and Bertie. She lived for 35 happy years at 5 Westhill, Lamphey, where she had many good friends and neighbours. Her love of children continued for many years after her own children had grown up, as she and her good friends, Heather Mcllwraith and Mary Eddison ran firstly, Lamphey Playgroup and subsequently, Noddy's Playgroup in Pembroke. She was devoted to her family and cared deeply for her good friends. She will be sadly missed by her husband of 38 years, Butch; her children Carl, Claire and husband Nigel and Jamie; and also by her grandchildren Betsy and Bertie; together with her five brothers and sisters and their families; Doreen and Ron, Huw, Shan and Ron, Russell and Fiona, John and Diane and her many close friends. The service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium was conducted by Rev Norman Gilbert, pastor of Cosheston Mission church and the huge attendance at the funeral paid testimony to the love and esteem felt for Sue. There were family flowers only, but donations in lieu for Velindre Hospital, Whitchurch, Cardiff, which may be sent to John Roberts and Son, funeral directors, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock, who carried out the funeral arrangements.
