St Davids 11 Pontyates 5 St Davids gained their third win of the season with a gutsy all-round performance that saw them home against Pontyates and set the celebrations rolling for their hardy band of supporters.

Team manager John James was understandably jubilant since the last Saints' success was as far back as December 3rd, when they beat Furnace, and he told Telegraph Sport that it was due to a real commitment from the entire squad, especially from those on the field in the last quarter and facing a Pontyates' side determined to repeat their 27-12 home success against St Davids.

A measure of how tight events were can be gauged by the fact that there was only one score in the first half, when Saints' outside half Will Bateman darted over in the 25th minute after he and half back partner Adam Challoner had spread play first one way and then the other before Bateman rounded the move off wide out for an unconverted try.

There was some terrific cover tackling by the Saints' back row of Arthur Chambers, Steve Morris and skipper Eddie Bolger that kept out the Pontyates' pack for the rest of the period, with Gethin Bateman doing a good job in the lineouts and Nick Davies, Dan Colfer, Noel Lyons and Gerwyn Richards providing yeoman support in the close exchanges.

But Pontyates served notice of intent when they drew level within five minutes of the restart as number eight Kevin Davies crashed through for an unconverted try. The Saints made an almost immediate response as centre Phil Lamb slotted a penalty with a well-judged kick in the tricky wind.

Andrew Lamb, Richard Lewis, Sion Morgan and Geraint Morris all provided solid cover for the Saints as Pontyates pressed forward in search of the winning score but it fell instead to St Davids after they had brought on old warrior Jack Dudley in the closing stages. Big Jack and the rest of the St Davids' pack earned a late penalty which Phil Lamb landed and the singing in the Saints' clubhouse could be heard in Solva as they celebrated in true Saints' style!
