Young Welshman and Champcar aspirant Iwan Davies recently made an impressive debut in the British Superkart Series season opener at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire, winning the event in his class.
"It was a very productive weekend," commented Davies, who drives for Pembrokeshire-based CJ Davies Racing. "Being my first time in long circuit racing I simply planned to learn my craft, finish all the races and learn as much as possible. But to win my first event is fantastic, now I need to carry this form into the rest of the season."
Testing was hampered by heavy rain, making it difficult to get any decent track time. However, the sessions were used to learn the track to good effect. Saturday was run in two races. With Davies winning the first (and challenging some faster class karts in the process), his second placed finish in a rain-affected second race gave him class victory on aggregate.
But this was not without drama: Lining up on the grid with slick dry tyres, the heavens opened and forced competitors to make a last minute switch to rain tyres, without time to make any other adjustments to the chassis, which was less than ideal.
Davies, aged 23, was also quick to thank the team for their efforts: "The kart was virtually faultless all weekend which helped a lot, and both the engine and chassis worked well right from the outset. I also need to give special thanks to my father and everyone who rushed around at the last minute in fitting wet tyres on the grid before race two!"
The next round is at Oulton Park in Cheshire on July 8th, where Davies hopes to continue his success and extend his lead in the championship.
