A Pembrokeshire headteacher has joined a teenagers' online message site to take positive action against the growing problem of electronic bullying.

Chris Noble, head of Tenby's Greenhill School, has posted his profile on the popular 'blog' site Bebo after becoming concerned that it was being used for insulting messages about some of his pupils.

"I'm immune to anything that is said about me, but I would not want any of my staff or students to feel distressed or intimidated by comments or photographs of them that could appear on a site like this," he told the Western Telegraph. "So I thought that if I became a member, it would enable me to monitor any unpleasant goings-on."

Mr Noble - who this week launches his school's biggest-ever crackdown on mobile phones in the classroom - entered into the spirit of Bebo by including his own photo gallery on his site profile... two pictures of his treasured 1938 Lanchester car.

"But I drew the line at putting my own photo up, just in case it presented the temptation for people to deface it," he admitted.

After the head announced his plans to his sixth-formers, amused students have been logging on to his Bebo profile to leave their own messages and photographs under the 'groupie' category.

Parents have been informed that Greenhill is now redoubling its efforts to detect and confiscate mobile phones brought into school because of their increased use for 'inappropriate purposes'. His action comes as a conference in Cardiff on Friday heard that a four-year survey of 11,000 youngsters found that nearly 15% had received nasty or aggressive messages.
