Fishguard and Goodwick 15 Neyland 21 Neyland completed a derby double over Fishguard and Goodwick as they opened up a 16-point interval and resisted a determined Seagulls' comeback to follow their 34-10 home success with a win by six points.

The All Blacks played with the wind in the first period but faced stout resistance from a Fishguard pack led by veterans Evan Davies and Romeo Collella, ably supported by skipper Nathan Jenkins and his brother Stephen, Martin Davey and Wyn Harries.

The visitors quickly moved ahead when Mark Riley slotted two penalties after missing his first pot at goal.

Martin Roberts went close but was hauled down by opposing winger Owain Jones before the All Blacks finally broke down the stubborn Fishguard cover organised by Chris Evans and Rhodri Thomas when cagey scrum half Mark Riley broke right from a scrum five, dummied his way into space and supplied winger Delme Bateman with an easy scoring pass.

Mark Riley converted and added a third penalty after pushing an earlier attempt just wide, leaving the visitors with a comfortable buffer that was quickly reduced after the interval when Tim Jones notched a penalty from the Seagulls.

But Neyland showed their growing expertise as they set up a series of drives. Mark Smith, Craig Bennett, Martin Dawes, Adi Riley and replacement flanker Jamie Dalton were heavily involved alongside Busby and Williams.

Mark Chamberlain ruled the lineout roost and the All Blacks grabbed a quality try when Dalton, Williams and Smith took play into the top right corner and Chris Busby was on hand to claim the touch-down.

Perhaps Neyland thought the match had been won because they seemed to sit back and were caught on the hop as the Seagulls scored two tries in four minutes.

The first came when nippy scrum half John Miles raced clear from halfway without a hand on him and then Chris Evans intercepted in the same area and when he ran out of steam did well to supply Owain Jones with the final pass.

Tim Jones missed the first conversion but added the harder second kick.

These warning signs were fully heeded by Neyland, however, as they tightened their defence and made sure of the win.

Neyland stay in third place in the table and Fishguard remain bottom, a position that belies their gritty approach and good skills.

The match sponsors were Viv Parry, David Leyshon and Peter Lawrence.
