Naval and Military 0 Hakin United 1

Steve Mathias scored the only goal of a tight match in Swansea to help Hakin United continue their quest in the West Wales Cup by beating Naval and Military, a club run along the lines of the British Legion and containing a well-drilled defence that operated the offside trap.

With referees in the area reluctant to accept decisions by their club linesmen the regular blowing for offside unsettled The Vikings a little in terms of sustaining real pressure to force goals - but they were always in control and as manager Chris Tansey told Telegraph Sport straight after the game, these cup matches are always a bit of a lottery and he was satisfied with another win.

The goal came early in the second half when Ade Haworth made ground down the right to pose problems for a flat home back four and his drilled cross found Mathias lurking with intent as the Vikings' front-runner latched onto a tiny rebound and drilled the ball in with his trusty left boot from eight yards.

Mathias was playing in the unaccustomed position of striker alongside Mike Cooper because Paul Jones is awaiting the imminent birth of his first baby.

Another absentee was flu victim Karl Rhead, who had to cry off on Saturday morning but manager Tansey moved Nigel Armstrong to partner Kristan Bennett at the heart of the defence, with Adam Collins available to play at full back with Gerrard Grey, ready to help out because there was no rugby with Milford Haven.

This quartet formed a formidable back four so that Jason Morgan was rarely under pressure, with Armstrong again showing what an asset he is with his ability to play as sweeper.

The Vikings always held the edge in the first period as Haworth, Paul Turner, skipper Gary Dawes and Paul Chapman were very strong in midfield - but the temporary absence of Paul Jones would affect any side.

After Mathias had scored what turned out to be the winner there were other half chances for the Vikings - but in any extended cup run a team will have some single-goal wins en route!
