THE Police Complaints Authority is to supervise an investigation into the death of a man from Fishguard.
Mr William Coleman, aged 35, died on October 7th after being taken into custody at Islington police station.
He had been arrested at around 6 pm after being found allegedly driving a motorbike in North London under the influence of drink or drugs.
At 7 pm, Mr Coleman collapsed in the custody room during the booking-in procedure.
A police spokeswoman said: 'Emergency life support and first aid was given by the MPS (Metropolitan Police Service) and LAS (London Ambulance Service).
'The man was taken to the University College Hospital, where his life was pronounced extinct at 11.15 hours.'
She said the cause of death has not yet been ascertained and the police are waiting for the results of toxicology tests.
A Police Complaints Authority (PCA) spokeswoman said the Metropolitan Police had voluntarily referred the incident to the PCA.
The matter is now being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Service, under the supervision of PCA member Mr Duncan Gear.
Mr Gear said: 'I will ensure a thorough inquiry is conducted into this tragic death. A copy will be sent to HM Coroner for the public inquest.'
Mr Coleman was single and lived in Gruneisen Road, North London.
A Requiem Mass was held at the Church of the Holy Name, Fishguard, yesterday (Tuesday).
